Yep, a poll on Spike's role in AtS S5

Yes, this is prompted by the discussion in my post about Spike in AtS S5 plus a couple questions I've been meaning to ask for a while on the Buffy/Angel Chosen scene. Anyway, I'm not looking/expecting validation for my opinions here (I do get the idea that I'm in the minority). But this does seem to be a somewhat divisive issue among Spike-fans, ( Read more... )

The Buffy/Angel kiss of End of Days/Chosen...

It surprised me; I didn't believe for one minute that she'd do that. But maybe she would in a high tension moment without thinking -- I'm very reluctant to say anything in canon could ever be out of character.

Angel's behavior during the End of Days/Chosen scene

This was completely impossible in the context of Home. It was done as if AtS and BtVS were actually in different dimensions or even completely different networks.

Did you like Buffy's "cookie dough" speech?

God no. She's young but not that immature. We all wanted to postpone adulthood but Buffy's been head of her household for three years and responsible for saving the world for eight. She's not cookie dough.

And she's responsible to herself for knowing what she wants if it shows up again after four seasons wanting her back.

Were you okay with how Spike's story ended in Chosen?

No. It had a certain charm but the sadness of giving up on his inner romantic disappointed me.

Overall, were you okay with Spike's part in AtS S5?

I suppose I was okay with it but the AtS writers didn't really respect who Spike was deep inside and often treated him like comic relief or a foil for Angel. Back on BtVS Spike was never just a means to the end of developing the main character but a meaningful individual in his own right.

Spike making a joke about vamping his mother in Lineage

Spike would never have done that.

Were you okay with how they executed Spike's contacting of Buffy upon his arrival in AtS S5?

Do you mean not contacting? Yeah, that was the most likely thing for him to do after the way Chosen ended.

Do you feel Spike's sacrifice for Fred in Hellbound was a significant character revelation?

Nope. That's just what Spike would do. Probably would have done the same thing for Dru, Angel, or Buffy before that soul got stuffed in him.

Were you okay with Spike's overall treatment of Harmony in AtS S5?

No. He was gratuitously mean in a way that was incompatible both with the teasing, taunting pre-soul Spike and the softer quieter post-soul Spike.

The Girl in Question

Love it. The only time I really feel the Spangel.

Makes me sad for the way Buffy gets treated like a trivial sidelight though. If somebody dropped a screener of this episode into a certain Rome mail slot I know some vampires that would get their butts kicked.

Were you okay with how Spike's story ended in Not Fade Away?

The ending of NFA was, as is often said, perfect. The plot that led up to it where the good guys deliberately doom themselves just to show off is crazy and makes no sense whatsoever for anyone but Wes.

Since Buffy is my favorite character I'm not really happy with any Spike ending that doesn't involve picking out her curtains.

Which ending for Spike do you prefer: Chosen or Not Fade Away?

NFA is better. At least it doesn't feel like a personal failure.

Who's the coolest vampire?

Spike, Spike, and Spike.

lol!

Thanks for this. I've always wondered why people didn't like the cookie dough speech. It always appealed to me. It's not so much a statement as to her maturity, but more a simple acknowledgment that she doesn't need a guy in her life (like she realized in S5's I Was Made to Love You). She needs to find out herself first before getting into a relationship. And I actually rather like that message.

Also, like swsa says below, she was totally giving Angel the brush-off with that, and that just amuses me.

You speak pretty words. I agree with you, though this obviously bothers me more than it bothers you. :)
