Oddly enough, Influence is a fic that compels me to babble on about it. I think it's because it is something that's a little disturbing, even for me...and I'm writing it. So excuse me while I, again, talk about Influence.
Seriously though, I'm a generally cheerful and nice person and I hadn't thought I'd be writing a dark fic when I entered fandom. I also didn't think I'd be writing so much sex. Or biting. The biting kinda squicks me, actually.
I like reading sex in fanfics, no denying that. But I had always imagined I'd skip over writing sex scenes cause it's just not something I'm interested in writing. Influence, though, has had a sex scene in each chapter so far. And they're fairly kinky sex scenes. And the last one involved blood. Which is...icky...
Having a sex scene per chapter was done intentionally, though. I feel like such a perv for all the sex stuff in the fic, but it's done for a reason. Given where Buffy was at the beginning of the fic, I felt it important to show the carnality of sex without any sort of romance to demonstrate that sex is not gonna be the answer to all the character woes (As it can sometimes turn out to be in fanfic). Instead, the sex is used in various ways to demonstrate characterization and the power struggle between Spike and Buffy.
Still, I've been hoping that it doesn't seem like, "Oh, she's making them have sex again!"
Personally, I've been trying to make the sex scenes somehow not erotica, just by way of the circumstances surrounding them. After all, sex has sort of lost its...sexiness to Buffy. So the scenes aren't meant to titillate. I actually don't think they're too graphic, come to think of it. Well, not relative to some other fics I've seen.
Course, nobody's complained, so I probably shouldn't worry about it. :) It's just a concern because I don't want it to seem like I'm throwing sex in there for the sake of having sex, and I hope it hasn't turned out that way. I'm trying to keep the sex scenes relevant, even though I have purposely put a lot of sex in the fic.
Now I do have to pause and appreciate the appropriateness of me posting the latest chapter after my last few posts being about Spike's character journey with regards to his soul. I noticed the humor in that while posting the chapter, but I didn't think anybody would notice. People did. You guys rock. :)
I'll just say that, while I do think Spike's character journey required him to get his soul in canon, all bets are off in fanfic. Fanfic is my way of exploring other possibilities, and I may explore a slightly less-than-ideal journey for Spike's character. You never know.
