Also of interest is the way masculinity is constructed; Xander tries to be a man by aping Sergio Leone films, which are (as BGF pointed out in the comments for the IMG notes) Italian Sergio Leone westerns based on Japanese Akira Kurosawa samurai films based loosely on John Ford Westerns which were based on overall American myths; Xander doesn't come at masculinity super-naturally and is trying to reconstruct what he thinks a man should be from scraps of diluted old, outdated models.
OK I don't think this came across quite right. Oh well. BACK TO PACKING.
