Gratitude?

Made the round on Tumblr a while back, so I had Chosen on the brain when I watched Hells Bells a few nights ago. I love the Spuffy scene in that episode. It's fantastic. And I was struck by this part at the very end:
BUFFY: I should...
SPIKE: Yeah.
She starts to walk past him.
SPIKE: But it hurts?
She stops, turns back.
BUFFY: Yeah.
SPIKE: (quietly) Thanks.
Spike...thanks her for admitting that it hurts to see him with another woman. Thanks her. Thanks her.
Since then, my mind's been setting this side-by-side with his thanking her in Chosen for her "I love you". My mind's been flashing back to appeals for "crumbs" in Crush, too.
My mind hasn't managed to coalesce much together from any of that. But I find it interesting in its potential resonances and connections and implications blah blah blah I'm so stuffy, give me a scone and I thought I'd toss it out to you guys.
