Sunday rape linkspam

There's been some discussion on metafandom about the age-old, "Why didn't she go to the police?" question. Never mind about the metafandom thing, because this is a common question posed to rape survivors, and many people in fandom have explained why. But I want to point out a link I had handy to drive the point home.

This is why women often don't go to the ( Read more... )

My husband and I have talked about this, and I've told him: should I ever be raped (God forbid), I do not know that I would go to the police, even though I am the perfect sort of victim to obtain a conviction. I'm white, middle class, married, and don't party. If I drink, it's at home or among friends, or with my husband.

But still, I know exactly what would happen to me if I went to the police, what the response would be, how I would be raked over the coals. I know because I worked in a county attorney's office, and because I'm a lawyer, and I've seen sexual assault cases from the inside. It's unfortunate, but entirely true.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd report it, either. Cause I'm not a perfect victim. I frequent bars, I've had casual one-night-stands before, I sometimes drink to excess, I have mental health issues, etc etc.

Of the five people I know who've been raped, only one went to the police. And the guy got convicted, but not on the rape charge. He was also being charged with domestic abuse, and they nailed him on that. Not the rape. :/

We've got a ways to go. *sigh*

Re, your first link, then I wondered if you'd seen this post? It strikes me as the sort of thing you might want for these posts.

I have (and ♥ impertinence). I've actually gathered a number of LJ posts that came out of the latest metafandom thang. They just didn't make it on this linkspam...for some reason that doesn't make any sense unless you know my completely off-the-wall organizational system. ;)

Will be on next week's, though. :)

Thanks so much for the link to that site, Gabs. I can't wait to check it out--and to link everyone I know to it. This is something we have to talk about it. Silence is unacceptable.

You know, I read through a lot of this stuff and, after a while, it all starts to smush together in my mind. But the Women's Justice Center site always remains distinct for me because I found it so compelling in its presentation of the problem with the law enforcement aspects. I very much encourage people to pass the link around.
