So, I'm still on my desktop because the Geek Squad called and cancelled and their next appointment isn't until Monday -- which is crappy customer service, but because I have no IT skills, they have me every bit at ransom as the stupid Malware does in the first place.
This next is 500 words. If I ever get around to writing this story, anybody who has read all these will be bored to tears.
The word:
Unloved
Irene stood up. “I think I should be going. Some of us have to work in the morning.”
Sirius scrambled to his feet. “You’re working tomorrow?”
Irene shrugged. “Of course.”
“We just agreed to take all this up to Hogwarts.”
She waved her arm at the group. “You lot don’t need me for that. Anyway, the fewer people the less attention you’ll get.”
“She has a point,” chimed Regulus.
Sirius frowned at him and led Irene closer to the door.
“Look,” he hissed, “if Regulus is right than Voldemort has at least one person in your department…”
“All the more reason to go to work as usual and not raise suspicion,” she retorted.
“It’s not safe.”
“Don’t worry, Sirius. I know how to keep my head about me.”
He bristled. “I’m keeping my head about me too, Irene.”
“That’s good.” She patted one of his cheeks while placing a soft platonic kiss on the other. “Keep it up.”
It fell well short of what he wanted, but he still closed his eyes and savoured every sensation of the brief contact.
All too soon, she pulled away. He looked at her and she winked before waving at the others behind him. “Ta, everyone.”
He tried to return to the sitting area as casually as possible. Regulus looked blessedly bored, but Lily and James were both obviously curious and amused.
“So…erm…what are we going to tell Dumbledore?”
“Never mind that,” James said pointing towards the door. “What was that about, mate?”
Sirius faked innocence. “What? Nothing.”
Lily snorted and leaned back in her seat with a knowing grin.
“See? Even my wife doesn’t believe that.” James looked at him expectantly.
“She’s making him wait,” Regulus provided.
Sirius glared at him. “Thank you.”
James actually guffawed. “What?”
Lily was smiling broadly now. “Leave him alone, James. I think it’s sweet.”
“That’s because you didn’t live with him seventh year when we were waiting and they were…definitely not.” James’s look told Sirius that payback would be hell.
“I thought you didn’t mind waiting,” Lily said archly.
Still looking at Sirius, James’s eyes got wide. He turned to his wife. “Erm…of course I didn’t darling. That doesn’t mean I wanted to hear Sirius plan out his…exploits.”
Lily pursed her lips thoughtfully and patted her starting to show belly. “Maybe Irene has the right idea…”
“Oh really?” James looked over his shoulder at Sirius as if to say ‘watch this.’ “What if I told you…?” He leaned close and whispered something to Lily.
She gasped and smiled. Then she gave Sirius an apologetic look. “Sorry, Sirius - I’m afraid I’m in no condition to give you moral support just now. James will explain later. Gotta go.”
As she got up and dragged James towards the door he grinned at Sirius. “Padfoot, I do know a charm that makes the shower extra icy if you need it.”
“Sod off!” Sirius growled.
“You know,” Regulus said after they left, “I’m beginning to think I’ve underestimated the deviousness of Gryffindors.”
