It's a little after midnight when he hears the knock at the door. His niece is asleep in her room. His nephew is with his mother. Seeley called earlier to let him know that everyone was going out to sing karaoke. Did he want to come and join them? They could ask Rebecca to watch Arabella. Gabe declined. He hadn't been feeling well. Headache. Not that he told his overprotective big brother that. Instead he said he was happy to stay with Arabella, and he was.
He's checking his watch as he walks to the door. It's too late for visitors. Seeley wouldn't forget his keys. When he checks the door and sees Angela and Jack on the other side he feels his chest tighten. Something isn't right. Opening the door he looks at them, and he can see the tears in her eyes.
"What happened?"
Two words. Just two words, but it feels like it's taking everything in him to ask. What happened? Where's my brother? Is Seeley okay? What happened? What happened?
"Gabe, Seeley was shot..." Angela's words are cut off as a picture on the shelf suddenly flies off and slams into the wall. The crash wakes up Arabella. "I'll go check on her." If she's scared of Gabe she doesn't show it. Instead she rushes toward the sound of the baby crying.
"I can take you to the hospital. Ang will stay with Bella." Bella. The nickname that Gabe rarely used because he liked her proper name.
"Does Rebecca know?" He asks, as he stares at Jack. He's fighting so hard not to send Jack flying back into a tree. It's hard to control his abilities when he's upset. He's terrified right now. Absolutely terrified.
"Officers went to inform her. I can call your dad..."
Wrong words. More pictures fly off the shelf. Jack takes a step back. Arabella screams louder. Tears form in Gabe's eyes as he forces himself to step out of the house and breathe. His brother has been shot. It's bad enough that they are informing him and Rebecca. Bad enough that someone needs to inform John.
"Is he dead?"
"No."
"How bad?"
Silence.
"How bad?!"
"It's bad, Gabe. Let me take you to the hospital."
Gabe climbs into the car, stares out the window and refuses to speak. Refuses to acknowledge the situation. Tunes out as Jack calls John Booth to catch him up. He doesn't say anything at all because this isn't real. It's a mistake. Seeley is fine. Seeley is going to be upset that people were worried. He's fine. He's fine.
Denial. Yeah, Gabe can do denial well.
