Gabriel sat at his desk, pouring over the photographs and paperwork Eiko had given him. The house was a few miles east of the Shropshire Hills, and due south a half-mile from St. Albans. He could stand out in the garden and see the mountains separating England from Wales. It was beautiful country, and he remembered how much he'd missed home. It'd be good to be normal again, leave the Nexus behind for a long while and simply give his mind and body a rest from it all. He had enough money from working at the institute to keep the utilities going indefinitely. Food wouldn't be an issue either, between the market that was a short walk away and the garden he'd keep (no talking veggies, ye gods).
Three bedroom, two bathrooms, all the plumbing and the kitchen redone, and the house was sturdy. It wasn't ancient by any means, and definitely not magical, but it reminded him of his grandmother's when he was a boy, what with the creeping vines and the low wall along the side. All it needed was the sheep in the front yard, grazing on her flowers.
Now, just to tell Savannah and the rest of his adopted brood. He wasn't sure whether he looked forward to it or not. He hoped she'd be receptive to the idea, but she had a lot of friends in the Nexus. In the end, he'd decided it would be up to her where she lived. She was getting older, and she deserved to make her own choices now. She'd had too many taken from her in the last few years.
He leaned back, still studying the photographs, and drank his tea. From the cellar, he could hear the turnips holding their weekly uprising against the potatoes. Sigh.
