Here there be geekery

Lately, I have been debating over if I should get a new phone or upgrade my PC. Both have their merits and fun values. The phone upgrade really isn't necessary due to the fact that my current handset can do everything I want it to. I questioned the PC upgrade as I have been moving my gaming more and more to the XBox360, even the shooters. Yea, ( Read more... )

I will likely only make the move to Vista if either 1) XP Pro barfs at the new hardware for some reason, which I have seen it do on occassion. Or 2) I want to make the move to 64-bit computing. Which considering this will be mostly a gaming rig, I doubt I will make the move to 64-bit unless it is necessary as so far it offers absolutely no advantage to performance. And in some cases will perform slower than the 32-bit counterpart just due to the nature of running non-native code. But with only 4gig of ram, the move to Vista would be rather moot since the extra bloat that 64-bit processing takes up in memory would basically neutralize the benefits anyway.

And man please....store bought computer? You're trying to make me laugh, right? ;) A pre-built system with the hardware I listed would also run twice the price I am paying to build it.

I already run two ubuntu systems at the house. One is a Samba file server which is getting the HDD drive upgrade due to the fact it currently is running in JBOD raid at the moment with 4 old ATA drives and I am afraid one is going to give out and kill the entire FS. I am also going to set it up as a DNS caching server when this happens as well

The other box is hooked directly up to the TV in the living room and used to mainly stream movies/tv shows from the samba server. I've also set it up to run SlingPlayer via Wine to connect back to my dad's slingbox in MS when he is visiting. However SlingPlayer is really difficult to get running stable that way.
