This rant may be long, and will consist of stuff mostly about comics. There'll be other stuff as well! :P
Spider-Man. He's pretty much one of my favourite superheroes ever. He's a normal guy, with normal problems who just happens to be a superhero with superhero problems too. Apart from being one of the smartest guys in the Marvel Universe, he's also one of the nicest. He's got a good heart, and always tries to do the right thing. He's also one of the wittiest guys in comics, with a sense of humour that's cutting, funny, sarcastic and cute. Adorkable was a word made for this guy. (And Seth Cohen. But, Seth grew up on comics, so I can safely say his sense of humour was probably shaped by Spidey and Sandy Cohen. But that's a rant for another time.) The point that I'm getting to is, Spider-Man is pretty damn awesome.
Unfortunately for him, he doesn't have a lot going right for him in his life. The constant guilt of his Uncle Ben's death. The stuff with the Osbournes, the Stacys, his (former) boss JJ, and general bad-ness that would've turned anyone else evil by now. There are two things in his life that give him hope, and pretty much give him a reason to get up every morning. One is his Aunt May (who is awesome) and the other is his wife Mary-Jane (who, when written properly, is also awesome). I gotta ask:
WHY YOU GOTTA KEEP S@*#ING ON PETER FOR?!
From the fact that I'm spending what little free time I have left these days writing this, it's pretty obvious I'm a big fan of Spidey's. And while I realise that ever since the comics began, angst and turmoil have been a big part of the mythos, it still don't mean you gotta kill his soul! Peter's life is at an all-time low right now. Iron Douche told him to reveal his secret ID to the world. He had to quit his job as a teacher, MJ and May had to pretty much stay prisoner in the Avengers HQ and when he got a turn of conscience, and couldn't beat up on the good guys anymore, he had to go on the run. (Which I still don't understand, cos he's still a registered superhero, but I digress)
Now there's the chance that Marvel are gonna split up Peter and MJ. Why? Cos as far as I can tell, a bunch of the staff don't like the marriage. They say it ages Peter, limits his adventures, etc. I'm pretty sure I ranted about this about a year ago in here somewhere, so forgive me if I repeat myself. Peter being married does not age him. It just means that Spidey can't go around snogging random girls, not that he ever did in the first place. I mean, Johnny Storm getting married, that'd be a bad idea. Torch is a nice guy, but he's a playboy and him settling down is a long way off (I probably won't see it in my lifetime). Peter's different. He was gonna settle down the minute he knew he found the right girl. No ifs, ands or buts about it. He's just like that. He's at least 26 years old in the comics right now, that's not too young to be married.
And I hate the excuse that "kids won't be able to relate to Spidey if he's married". When was the last time comics were written for kids? Not in the last 10 years (excluding Young Justice, comics fun for all!). Most young boys, cos let's face it they're not exactly targeting young girls, don't really care. They just wanna see Spidey kick ass and be funny. It's like they're saying that MJ makes him less of a character or something, which really gets on my nerves, as she is one of the few kickass women in comics that don't turn evil or into sluts!
Oh! Oh! And it's perfectly alright for Storm to get married, as it adds to her character, but it's the total opposite for Spidey. That just smacks of "it's alright for her, cos she's a girl" to me. Which I really hope is me just overreacting and not the actual line of thinking here.
It's not as if it's even a new thing. In real time, Pete and MJ have been married for 20 years. I was 2 when they got married. So, most young people have grown up knowing that Spidey got a wife. Writers should be able to write stories, regardless of the characters situation. Especially when you're writing someone elses characters. It can be done! Peter David writes an excellent Spidey book, and includes MJ in it too! Some of my favourite moments of JMS's run on Amazing Spider-Man were the scenes between MJ and Peter. To use some LJ-speak, they're my ultimate OTP.
SO LEAVE THEM THE F*@# ALONE DAMMIT!
Comics these days are depressing me. Young Justice and JLI are pretty much destroyed, Tim Drake's getting more depressed by the day, the only kick-ass females in books these days are written by Gail Simone (whom I love to bits) and all my favourites are getting killed off to make way for the dudes they replaced to come back. WHY IS KYLE EVIL NOW?! WHY?!?! AND HE'S PARALAX?! ARE YOU TRYING TO TAKE THE PISS?! *sigh* DC, is it to keep the balance? Bats is acting like a human being again, but everyone else gets messed up in the process? *weeps* TEEED! And Marvel! Where the heck is my swashbuckling, daredevil, silver-tongued, fuzzy blue charmer?! Nightcrawler is also awesome, and I love him just as much as Spidey, so give him the attention he deserves! And in a book with his mates, please?!?! I will give Marvel credit, there are a ton of books I still enjoy, and there's a wide variety in that there's something for everyone. But just because there's a book dedicated to Pete and MJ's romance, doesn't mean it can end in the main books!
For those of you who are J-Drama fans, it's like the equivalent of splitting up Doumyouji and Makino in Hana Yori Dango. It just shouldn't be done, ever.
EVER, YOU HEAR?!
Okay, that segment is over. I feel much better for ranting now! XD
Some amusement! Laugh at my very, very bad Photoshop skills. Entitled: Okada on the brain. XD
Okay, if you must ask, it's cos I couldn't be bothered to draw in hair. It was hard enough to do this! XD
Context: I was on hold, trying to get some company information from a hotel. ¬_¬
Crudely drawn, but I am not an artist! 0% artist here! And I know, I spelled directions wrong but I ain't going back to correct it!
EDIT: Upon watching newer episode of the new Fantastic Four cartoon, I must profess my love for the running gag of Johnny Storm's girly scream! XD It's friggin hilarious, and surprisingly, makes me love him even more. Yay Johnny!
