Flist, I would like to buy a new laptop. I would like to buy a new laptop that costs less than $800. I would like to buy a new, reliable laptop that is not a netbook and that costs less than $800. Any recommendations?

The future of the world depends on this, guys. The future of me fucking around on the internet depends on this.

As long as I've had laptops, I've always had Toshibas and have been very happy thus far. They make some reasonable ones - the silly man got one for 399 $ and is happy with his, too.

I love the sound of that price! And from looking at Toshiba specs on Best Buy they seem to have decent graphics systems. Phew. Thank you!

I'd recommend Toshiba if you're techy, advent or acer if you're not :).

I WOULDN'T recommend ibm or sony.

While I wouldn't quite call myself techy, I've worked in tech support long enough to be picky. A second rec for Toshiba is promising, so I'll definitely be looking into them. Thank you!

+1 stay away from Sony -- overpriced, poor specs, poor build quality, ugh!

Most important advice, IMO, is to actually touch the model you're interested in buying unless you get *really* trustworthy opinions on it. Make sure you think it feels solid and long-lasting.

Physical build quality is the #1 most important feature in a lappy if you're using it constantly -- it's far easier to put up with slow performance than "my screen fell off," if you have to choose between the two.
