Rachel Berry looked around, discreetly sliding into a booth at a local cafe. She stayed quiet for a few moments before glancing across the table at her rival.
"You know we could get into a lot of trouble if we're caught together, right? At least I will," Rachel said quietly, wishing she could find it within herself to truly care.
Brushing a strand of dark hair from her eyes, Blair Anderson smiled wanly at Rachel. "I know. I heard how everyone railed on you for being Jesse's beard. How could they not see he was gay?"
A ghost of a smile flitted across Rachel's face. "Especially with Kurt's supposedly excellent gaydar."
"I got you a coffee with Irish cream and soy milk," Blair said pushing a cup towards the smaller girl.
Happily taking a sip of the scalding hot drink, Rachel gave a tired sigh. "I'm going crazy, B. I really don't know how much longer I'm going to be able to hold on."
Blair looked sympathetically at her friend. They might have been each other’s biggest competition, but neither one cared much for show choir anymore. The two girls had bonded over broken hearts and sorbet a few months ago, back when their lives had been disrupted by a certain hazel eyed girl at Rachel's school.
"What would you say if I asked my dads to enroll me at Dalton?" Rachel mumbled nervously, cradling her coffee in her hands, a deep and troubled look in her eyes, a look that didn’t belong on her young, bright face.
"We'd love to have you in our ranks," Blair said softly, not really meaning her school’s show choir, The Warblers. She was just thinking about the school as a whole. With it's no bullying tolerance and love for the arts, Rachel would fit in perfectly. Plus, they would no longer have to hide their friendship anymore.
"Thank you," Rachel said in an equally soft tone.
"How- how did she seem today?" Blair seemed to choke on her words and her eyes took a sudden interest in her manicured nails.
Rachel pondered her friend’s question. How did Samantha seem today? Wincing, Rachel recalled the blonde kissing Quinn, cuddling with Quinn, making jokes and laughing. Samantha seemed happy.
"That bad, huh?" Blair asked with a weak laugh. "I knew Princess Quinn would make her happy. Sam always did like 'em bitchy and girly."
It made Rachel's blood boil in her veins as she thought about Quinn Fabray and her love for breaking people apart. Rachel had first met Quinn at freshman orientation. Within minutes, the new girl had torn Rachel's world to shreds. Quinn had deemed Rachel a loser. And who were the students of Lima to argue with their new head cheerleader? They didn't see that Quinn saw Rachel as a threat. They didn't see that Quinn wanted what she couldn't have. At the time, she’d wanted Santana and Brittany, the two most popular girls in school. Two of the most beautiful people Rachel had ever seen. Without them, Quinn would have been nothing. And by chasing Rachel away, she was free to have them. And to have her popularity.
Rachel wished her ex-girlfriends hadn't been so easily swayed by pretty words. She wished they had loved her enough to fight for her. But who was Rachel trying to kid? They had been 14 years old. That wasn't storybook, fairytale, till the end of the time love. That was puppy love. Fickle and fleeting. No match against peer pressure and
Quinn had dropped Santana and Brittany to become a straight girl, for a while. When she got pregnant, Quinn had run back to them, crying that she loved them and only them. After her baby was born and given away like charity hand outs, Quinn left Santana and Brittany again, kicking them to the bottom of the pyramid - literally in Santana's case - in order to climb the social ladder. A week later Quinn tore apart another couple to get what she wanted.
That's when Blair’s life had come crumbling down. The Dalton Warbler had finally been reunited with her childhood sweetheart, her best friend and lover, only to have it vanish in an instant when Quinn set her sights on Blair's then-girlfriend, Samantha Evans.
"As long as she is happy, then so am I," Blair said bravely. "I mean, we had our chance. Obviously it wasn't meant to be."
"Bull!" Rachel protested, angry that Quinn Fabray could hurt so many people. "Quinn’s just a homewrecker! It's in her nature to rip people apart, and to ruin good things. In her world, only she is allowed to be happy." Rachel took Blair's hand with her two. "Blair, I love you, you know that right?"
"Well, well, well," a silky smooth voice purred. "Berry courting the enemy, again? Tsk. Tsk. Berry, will you never learn? They just want our set-list, not your damaged goods."
Blair's hand tensed, her fingers clutching Rachel's hand for dear life. Samantha stood at Quinn's side, looking uneasy. Santana and Brittany were a few steps behind, expressions darkening and eyes flashing when they saw Blair's hand in Rachel's.
"What do you want now?" Rachel snapped, her irritation bubbling over. "Come to tell me again how I don't belong here? That I shouldn't blame you for trying to send me on my way? And why? Because you know I'm better then you'll ever be? I don’t want to hear it, Fabray."
Quinn's eyes blazed with anger. "Careful, man-hands, I might have to increase your daily quote.” She sneered and eyed Rachel and Blair. “I might need to teach you another lesson, too. Shall we go see what Mr. Schuester has to say about your new girlfriend?"
Rachel gave a scoff. She stood up, dragging Blair with her. "Nice try, Q, but unfortunately, any comments from Mr. Schue would be highly inappropriate, seeing as I'm no longer his student. And good luck with increasing the slushie attacks. But I don't believe any of your mindless minions want to be legally charged with harassment, do you? And I'm pretty sure Blair isn't after our set-list. We haven't had much time to talk about glee, if you catch my meaning."
Three of the four girls took sharp breaths, one of them making a strangled sound. "You've been getting your mack on with her?" Santana demanded, eyeing Blair with a dangerous glint in her eyes.
"It's none of your business," Rachel snapped, her heart clenching at the look of hurt that flashed in Brittany's eyes. "It stopped being your business when you chose Quinn over me. Now please respect my choice as I respected yours."
"Blair?" Samantha asked, confused. "You're with the dwarf?"
"Sam, I don't even know who you are anymore," Blair said sadly as she looked at her ex. "You never used to care about being popular. Now look at you. Insulting a girl you don't even know."
The two girls left the cafe with their heads held high, hands clasped together to keep each other up, and their hearts laying in little pieces inside.
Three girls were left inside with an ache in their chests that turned to rage as they looked at the blonde vixen in their midst who had complicated their lives.
"Bring a raincoat to school tomorrow," Santana said coldly to Quinn. "I'm taking the school back and you can go fuck yourself. Because you took this too far. I can't believe I let you ruin the best thing to ever happen in my life. You're not worth even a tenth of her!"
"Sounds about right," Samantha agreed with a sad but resentful look.
"Welcome to hell..." Brittany said sweetly. "Bitch."
Quinn stood shell-shocked as the three girls left, feeling crushed and alone and very much like Lucy Caboosey. Friendless, and a loser. Time to switch schools again.
