 Title: Keep Breathing

Author: sgh_intern

Rating: Same as the show I guess

Summary: Takes place straight after 3x25, which I haven't seen. It's my first go at GA fic so go easy on me. I know the chapter's as short as the nazi but at least it's not as mean.

Chapter One

Derek walked towards Meredith as she stood on the bridge, leaning back against the rail and staring at the rain through the practically floor to ceiling windows at the front of the hospital. He knew that he was probably the last person she wanted to see, but he couldn’t not go to her and put his hand as close to hers as was possible without touching her, so strongly was he drawn to her. Derek knew that she was going to be angry and quite possibly end it, but he was in it and he needed to know if she was even remotely interested in fixing their problems. He didn’t want it to be over but if she couldn’t return what he was giving and she was going to break his heart, a quick break up had to be better than a torturous wait for the end. Rip off the band-aid, no anaesthesia.

“Meredith…” It was his quiet soft ‘are you awake’ McDreamy voice, the voice that usually preceded the ‘everyone’s asleep and I want sex’ McDreamy voice. For some reason this irritated her more than the fact that he was there at all.

“I came here to be alone.” Actually she’d returned to the hospital to escape everyone else’s emotional trauma, to actively not think, about anything, or deal with anybody else’s crap. Upon reflection standing in such a public place in her rather noticeable bridesmaid’s dress didn’t seem like the greatest of ideas.

“Meredith.” He was pushing, his voice wasn’t dreamy it was insistent, he wanted to have the conversation whether Meredith was ready or not.

“Seriously Derek? You want to do this now? You’re not in any way joking? You tell me to fish or cut bait minutes before my commitment-phobic best friend was supposed to get married and you want an answer not just the same day, but right after she kicked me out of the apartment she shared with her ex almost husband because I couldn’t make her stop crying because Burke left her at the chapel and now he’s disappeared. Seriously! I’m still in the freaking dress!”

“You, me and formal wear…never ends well does it.” Derek half-smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes.

“I’m mad at you right now. You don’t get to bring up the sex, especially the adulterous hospital sex when you stole my panties!” Meredith turned and began to storm off, her heels clicking angrily on the floor. Derek grabbed her arm and she swung round eyes blazing. “Let go of my arm or you’ll find out exactly how ineffectual my fists aren’t.” Never in the twelve months he’d known her had Derek ever seen Meredith that angry. She really was ready to hit him. He let her go automatically and the angry clicking resumed.

“What the hell have you done now?” Derek turned to see Miranda Bailey coming out of the Chief’s office, he hadn’t even seen her walk past him to go in, he and Meredith had been so immersed in their argument. Derek opened his mouth to say something but Miranda stopped him with a gesture. “I don’t want to know. Just fix it. Don’t be looking at me like I’m Dear Abby in scrubs, I don’t care about your love life. Yang won’t be in tomorrow and I’m not having another one of mine ring in heartsick, so go. Fix it.” Derek nodded and set off after Meredith. “People leaving people on their wedding day, people yelling about stealing panties in the middle of a hospital, stupid is what it is.”
