Chapter 24

She was already late to the airport. Poor Diego was going to think she had forgotten about him. She couldn’t find her pants though. She had jeans that fit, but none of them had the belly panel that she now needed because her belly was so huge and it was way too hot to wear jeans. “George, where are my pants?” she questioned as she grabbed her shirt. She put the baby blue tube style shirt on and glanced at herself in the mirror. It looked pretty good. As she approached her third and finale trimester of pregnancy she had to face the scary reality that none of her clothes fit anymore and her scrubs were now too small. Every time she turned around, she was at Motherhood buying new clothes.

“Which pants Callie?” he questioned coming out of the bathroom with shaving cream still on his face. “You’ve got pre-pregnancy pants. You’ve got bigger pants that were the I don’t want to embrace my pregnant shape pants. You’ve got maternity pants with no belly thingy and you’ve got pants with a full belly thingy. Which pants are you in search of?”

Callie rolled her eyes at him, what a dumb question. “I need the maternity pants, now whether it’s the ones with the full panel or no panel, I don’t care, but none of them are up here,” she complained. “So if you’re going to do the laundry, make sure you bring my pants back up here, because now I have to waddle my fat ass down to the laundry room, back up here to finish getting ready and then downstairs again.”

“I’ll go get your pants Miss Moody, I’m sorry if I’ve been a little busy being a doctor and haven’t gotten to your laundry!” he snapped heading downstairs to the laundry room. He trudged angrily through the kitchen and into the laundry room, pushing the clothes out of the dryer and into the basket before heaving it into his arms and walking back through the kitchen.

“George?’ Louise said softly.

“Yeah Mom?” he questioned balancing the laundry basket on his hip.

“She’s having a hard time George, she’s six and a half months pregnant, we’re in the middle of a heat weave, she’s getting into her third trimester. These next few months might not be the most fun, but you have to be supportive.”

“She’s being bitchy and she calls me out when I’m not nice, so I’m just….”

“George, she’s pregnant. Remember the first trimester? The third is that all over again. The second is….”

“Called the honeymoon period, I know. I’m a doctor.”

“Well then act like you know and understand what your wife is going through!” Louise exclaimed.

George was surprised that his mother snapped at him that way. He made a face and headed upstairs with the laundry basket, Callie wasn’t the only one who was balancing a million and one things. Sure he wasn’t the pregnant one, but he had a lot of things he needed to take care of before the baby came. He had his worries. He dropped the laundry basket onto the bed and headed into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him, so he could finish shaving.

Callie heard the door slam and turned, seeing the laundry sitting on the bed. She went over to it and searched through it, grabbing a pair of capris and put them on. She glanced at herself in the mirror before grabbing her purse and sun glasses and heading out the door to the airport.

~*~*~

Diego stood at the front of the airport waiting for his sister. He wondered if she was bringing George. He loved that guy and he was extremely good for Callie. He glanced down at his flip flops and sighed, Seattle sure was going to be different. He hoped Callie hadn’t forgotten him. She was probably in some really neat surgery and had lost track of time. Maybe this would exactly like home. He never thought that Callie would forget him.

Callie sighed as she finally pulled into the airport and up to the Delta terminal and saw Diego sitting on a bench, with his suit cases. She couldn’t believe how late she had ended up, between not finding her pants and the traffic on the high way. She parked at the curb in front of Diego and got out of her SUV. “Diego!!! I am so sorry I’m late,” she said going over to him and sitting down next to him.

Diego glanced over at his sister, when he felt the bench shift a little. He smiled slightly as he leaned over and hugged her. Seattle would be different. He had Callie, he had George and he was going to be an uncle in about ten weeks. Callie had always been the most supportive of him. This was a new grand adventure for him.

“Too busy screwing George?” he teased. He smiled as he pulled away from their embrace. “Because believe me, if I had a man that looked like your husband, I would never get off of him.”

Callie laughed as she stood up and grabbed one of Diego’s smaller bags. She wanted to get to the hospital to meet George for lunch and then she had a surprise for Diego. She had a baby appointment with Addison and she planned on bringing him along after their lunch date with George. “No, it’s too hot and I’m too fat to really have sex anymore. Do I want sex, hell yeah, but it’s just so hard. I couldn’t find my pants, since none of my clothes fit anymore and I was being bitchy to George this morning, then there was traffic on my way here.”

Diego nodded and took the bag from her, “You’re too pregnant to be carrying my bags,” he insisted going to her SUV and opened the trunk. He put his smaller bag in and then went over to retrieve his larger one, placing it inside and slamming it closed.

“I’m still operating, I’m pretty sure I could carry a tiny little bag,” Callie laughed as she went around and got into the drivers seat. She waited for Diego to climbed in. “I’m so glad you’re here. School starts next week, right?”

“Yeah, move in Tuesday some social thing the following day and classes start on Thursday. I am so excited. How could I not be excited? Callie this is my dream! I’m here, away from Mom and Dad, I can be me! I can be free!” he exclaimed excitedly, clapping his hands together.

“Monday we have a barbeque with the entire O’Malley clan. Louise is hosting this year, so we’re going to need your help. The only time I’ve met all these O’Malley’s is at my wedding and the names began to run together. George’s brothers are going to help us get you moved in, since George has to work. I have to go in that morning, but the Chief gave me the afternoon off since I had something to do with you, my little baby brother,” she explained.

Diego nodded as he took in everything his sister was telling him. She had a real life here. She was happy here. She had a family who loved her, a husband, a family that included her and made her welcome and she was starting her own family. It made him realize that he could do all of those things in Seattle. He would become the person that his sister had already become. Seattle was the start of a new life, of a new Diego.

~*~*~

Callie and Diego were making their way through the hospital. Cristina had been nice enough to tell her that George was in the gallery. “Callie!!” Alex yelled running after her, chart in hand. “I’ve been paging you all morning. Sloan and I, we need a consult,” he explained handing her the chart.

“I didn’t answer your pages because I’m not on duty. I had to pick my little brother up from the airport. Diego, this is Dr. Alex Karev. He’s going into plastics. Alex, this is my little brother Diego, who moved here to attend the arts school,” Callie exclaimed quickly as she flipped opened the chart. She didn’t want to have to do this now, but there was a reason that Alex wanted her on the case and only her.

Diego stuck his hand out toward Alex, waiting for him to shake it. He trailed his eyes over his body. He couldn’t see much through the lab coat and scrubs. He hoped Callie would invite him with them somewhere where he would be wearing normal clothes so Diego could get a better look at this very fine doctor in front of him.

Callie noticed her brother ogling over Alex as she scanned through the chart. “Diego, you are not getting any type of plastic surgery,” she muttered. “Not by Alex or Mark.”

“Why not?”

“He’s too old for you and he doesn’t swing that way,” Callie muttered. She glanced up at Alex. “I’ll take a look at her knee and see what I can do. I have a lunch date with George and a baby appointment with Addison, but I’ll look. Go get my lab coat.”

Alex nodded, relieved that Callie was going to look at this woman for him. She was a domestic violence victim and she would barely let Alex and Mark near her as they tried to repair the burns. There was no way she was going to let any man operate on her knee. He headed off in the direction of the locker room to collect her lab coat.

“He is the sexiest man I have ever seen!” Diego exclaimed slapping his hand against the counter. “I believe I might need a face lift, something. Maybe my nose done, it is a little big.”

“You are not having any type of plastic surgery while you were here. I’m your legal guardian so I’d have to sign on it. Plus, Alex is straight. And if you think he’s sexy, wait until you meet McSteamy and McDreamy.”

“Who? Because Alex is McSexy.”

“Fine, Alex is McSexy. He is very McSexy, but McSteamy is better. All the other girls love McDreamy, but I don’t think there’s anything Dreamy about him,” Callie shrugged as Alex returned with her lab coat.

She took it from him and slid it over her shoulders. She to invest in a new lab coat a few weeks ago. This one was already to the point where couldn’t button it, but she still looked professional, so that was all that mattered. “Stay here with Alex and do not hit on him,” she warned Diego. She turned toward Alex, “He’s as gay as they come and he’s already named you McSexy. Take him to the gallery and hand him off to George,” Callie instructed before heading off in the direction of the patients room.

Alex nodded and headed off in the direction of the gallery hoping Diego would just follow him. Why did Callie have to put him in charge of her little brother? What if he lost him in the hospital? “Are you the Alex, that slept with Olivia that slept with George and gave him syphilis?” Diego questioned. .

“Yeah, wait, how do you know about all that?”

“When Callie and George came to visit in the spring, her and Alberto got into a big fight in the car and he brought up her STD experience and then she brought up George’s and names were thrown around,” he shrugged.

Alex shook his head, this kid was sharp and reminded him a lot of Callie. He had never thought about her having family. That wasn’t something they really talked about. “This is the gallery, George should be in there,” he said pointing toward the door. “I’ll see ya around. I need to go help your sister out stuff,” he shrugged heading in the direction of the patients room.

Diego rolled his eyes and opened the door to the gallery and spied him at the other end of the room surrounded by girls. There was no way all those girls flocked around a married man. He shrugged his shoulder and made his way through the crowd. “Who’s your favorite brother in law?” Diego questioned standing in front of George.

George chuckled as Meredith and Izzie giggled on either side of him. He hoped they would like Diego, but he had Callie’s DNA, so that was unlikely. George stood up and hugged the boy and moved some charts so he would have a place to sit. “You are. You are the only one of the Torres men I know I could take in a fight,” George laughed. “How was your flight? And where’s Callie? I thought we were all going to do lunch or did Miss Moody change her mind?”

Diego smiled, he had been there for five minutes and George was already including him. “My flight was good. I can’t believe how much freedom I have. How much my life could change in an instant. Alex asked her for a consult on a patient and that is where she is. I’m pretty sure she’s going to meet us up here when she’s done.

George nodded as he listened to the young man next to him, ramble on and on about the prospects of his new life. “Cute isn’t the word for her pregnant body,” he grinned which caused Izzie to rib him. “Hey!” he exclaimed.

“I’m Izzie, George’s best friend, since he doesn’t know how to introduce people.”

“And I’m Meredith, George’s other best friend. The three of us, used to live together and then Callie lived with us and then George and Callie moved out. So Alex lives with us,” she explained.

“I’m Diego, Callie’s brother,” he said shaking each of their hands. “And I’m going to the Seattle School Of The Arts starting next week.”

“Are you a painter?” Izzie questioned.

“No, I’m actually a performer. I love the stage. I want to do Broadway,” he smiled thinking of the way ‘Diego Torres’ would look in lights.

“So why aren’t you going to school in New York?” Meredith asked.

“I wasn’t accepted. Seattle accepted me, and it was the furthest away from my parents, so here I am. Plus, Cal is here and she’s just amazing.”

“Seriously?” Izzie questioned glancing over at Meredith.

“Seriously,” Meredith stated knowing what her friend was questioning.

~*~*~

After doing the consult for Alex and having lunch with Diego and George they headed over to the OB wing to meet up with Addison for her appointment. The nurse took her pulse and blood pressure along with her weight before sending her into the bathroom to produce a urine sample and then showed the three of them into an exam room.

“Couldn’t George just do the whole exam and everything?” Diego questioned as they waited. He glanced around at the posters hanging on the walls of the uterus.

“Does he know how? Yeah, I could probably do it with a mirror. But, Addison is my best friend and my doctor. And I’m George’s wife, therefore making him doing the exam unethical,” Callie explained before a knock sounded on the door and Addison came in holding her chart.

“Good Afternoon Dr. And Dr. O’Malley,” she smiled warmly.

“Hey Addie. That is my little brother Diego. Diego, this is our doctor and my best friend Addison.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you in person. I did see you at the wedding,” Addison smiled shaking his hand.

“Likewise Addison, from what Callie tells me we could be very good friends.”

Addison smiled and glanced over the chart, “Well you and Baby O are going very well. We’ll check his heart beat out and I’ll measure your belly,” Addison explained as she got the tape measure. “Shirt up to your breasts Callie,” she told her as she came over and placed the tape measure at the bottom of her breast bone and down her stomach. She studied the tape measure for a moment. “You’re measuring ahead, at 30 weeks and you’re 27.”

“What does that mean?” Diego questioned at his sister’s side. “You’re belly is so cute.”

“It means Baby O is growing like a weed already and will be a big baby or he was small at the ultrasound a month or so ago,” Addison explained getting the Doppler. “At your 32 week appointment, I’ll do another ultrasound just to check. We should probably do the blood sugar test, since you’re measuring big as well. First of next week and you’ll need the morning off.”

“I guess Tuesday, because we have plans on Monday with the O’Malley’s and Tuesday afternoon I have to help Diego move in. Well, I’m not moving things. Ronnie and Jerry are and I have to cook for them in return.”

“Tuesday morning then, I’ll have it set up on you’re way out. I’m sure the test will come back fine Callie. This will be cold,” she explained applying the gel to her stomach and then placing the Doppler on her belly, Baby O’s heartbeat filling the room. “Mom is doing an amazing job, he is perfectly healthy and he’s already head down,” Addison smiled.

Callie breathed a sigh of relief as she listened to her sons heartbeat. That was a comforting sound. Feeling him move inside of her was a comforting feeling. It meant he was safe and sound. If she had gestational diabetes it wouldn’t be the end of the world, she could deal with it as long as Baby O was born healthy. “Yeah, I could tell he went head down last night after….” She trailed off smiling up at George, knowing what they had done last night. She giggled and he laughed leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her lips.

“That happens, something sends them south, but that’s good. He knows where he needs to get. He may not move again,” Addison explained handing her a towel. “We’ll see you Tuesday morning.”

Callie nodded as she fixed her shirt and moved off the exam table. “Thanks Addie.”

“No problem.”

Diego hugged Callie, “He’s going to be so perfect. And I am so dressing him in pink.”

Callie laughed as she hugged her brother. She was glad he was here. He was so fun to be around and he could keep things in perspective. “As much as I love you and all, I’m sure George and Louise would rather him not turn into a mini Diego and no on the pink front. I’m just so glad you’re here.”

“Me too,” he whispered.

George smiled as he watched the two of them together. Diego seemed to be the only part of her family that she could truly relate too. They were both the odd balls, in completely different ways, but they still related to each other on so many levels. Ronnie and Jerry had that in each other, he had been the odd man out growing up. He was glad she had Diego in Seattle though.

~*~*~

Louise, Callie and Diego all sat at the island in the kitchen pealing and slicing potatoes for the potato salad. “So have you and George come up with any names?” Louise questioned glancing over at her daughter in law.

“We have possibilities, but nothing we both agree on. His middle name will be Harold, we just have to find a first name. And by the off chance Baby O comes out a girl her name would be Sage Louise,” Callie explained with a sigh as she placed her peeled potato in the bowl. “It’s just so hard, it’s his name, it will partly shape who he is and who he becomes. It needs to be something he can grow to love, not something we just picked.”

“Ronnie and Jerry are named after my father and Harold’s father. They each died when I was pregnant with the boys. We didn’t name George for two days. No, three because he was home when we finally named him. We couldn’t come home with anything that fit a third son and then Harold liked the name George and it grew on me, since my husband was calling him George.”

Callie laughed. She didn’t plan on doing that with her son, but she did understand the difficulties of choosing a name for her son. “George likes plain every day names, when I want something a little different, but something that will get him made fun of.”

“Diego Harold O’Malley, sounds like a great name to me,” Diego smiled.

Callie laughed again and rubbed her belly feeling Baby O kick. “Baby O says he loves his Uncle D, but does not want to be named after him. My favorite names are Owen, Joshua and Apollo. George wants Samuel, David, Levi. We sort of half way agreed on Judson and Zachary.”

Louise nodded as she grabbed a few more potatoes to peel. “Apollo and Levi I am not found of, but it is your baby, not mine. Callie, I’m going to be a grandmother,” Louise laughed. “I never thought my first grandchild would come from Georgie though.”

“Owen and Judson are my favorite. They’re both a little different, but not get your face shoved in the sand different. Are you having a Baby Shower Callie?”

“I’m sure I’m having a few of them Diego. I’m sure my mother in law is planning something and I’m sure Addie is planning something. And no you can not miss school to come to any of them.”

“Callie, this is my first grandchild, I am entitled to spoil a little.”

“But there’s no need too.”

“So like who all will be in the delivery room when Baby O is born?” Diego questioned dropping his potato into the bowl.

“Addison will be there for the delivery as will George and Louise. I’m sure Ronnie and Jerry will be in the waiting room, I’m not sure I want them seeing me panting and sweating and screaming. They might be scared,” Callie laughed. She had never really thought of having Ronnie and Jerry in the delivery room. If they wanted too, she honestly didn’t have a problem with it. They would be fun to have there during the labor for the laughs.

“So can I come if I want?” Diego asked softly.

“I’ll leave that up too you. I know how grown up you act and everything, but seeing me give birth, might be a little much. If you want to be there, I’d be happy to have you there,” Callie replied reaching for his hand, hoping he was understanding what she was saying. Her mother refused to have anyone in the delivery room with her. Actually, Callie was pretty sure they had all been c-sections.

“Well, I’ll at least be there to hold your hand and wipe the sweat off you,” Diego smiled squeezing her hand gently. He wasn’t sure he wanted to be in the room when his sister gave birth, but it would be pretty amazing to see his nephew shortly after his arrival.

“Callie, you are going to have a full room. You know half of that hospital is going to be in and out with everyone who was just at your ultrasound,” Louise laughed.

“They will all be there after he is born,” she corrected. “Because I am not having that many people watch me give birth.”

“It is a beautiful thing,” Diego pointed out.

“I’m a doctor, I’ve seen childbirth before. It’s as beautiful as it is disgusting,” Callie reminded him as she peeled another potato. “But Baby O and being a mother, it’s going to be worth it. All the pain and pushing….”

“Once you hold your baby in your arms, and see that he is fine, that all goes away,” Louise told her. “When you’re holding him for the first time, there’s such a peace with the world.”

Callie nodded, she had been told that a lot of times, read it a lot of places. She only got to hold her son one first time and she couldn’t wait to understand that feeling completely. “It’s just amazing how I love something so much and I don’t even know him. I’ve never touched him. In two and a half months he is going to be here,” she smiled.

“And it’ll go by so quick. The last months always do, until you hit 36 weeks, then it drags, if you let it. With my first, those three weeks just dragged on and on. With my second I was determined not to let it bother me. Those were my last days without having to share my baby. And Georgie was in a rush to get here. He came at 34 weeks.”

“George was a preemie?” Callie questioned. She had never known that. She could remember Louise saying he was small as a newborn, but had bulked up some before he started crawling. She had seen the pictures. George was a chubby baby.

“Yes he was. Harold was out on the road so I never bothered calling him. I didn’t want him to worry. Low and behold, I’m on the table crowning and Harold comes in. He found out from Ronnie and Jerry I was at the hospital. George was small, but his lungs were alright. I didn’t go back to teaching though until the following fall because I was afraid his little immune system couldn’t handle it.”

“Baby O is going to be born right in the middle of cold and flu season. I’m a little worried about that, but I’ll be nursing, so he should have all the protection he needs from me.”

“Well you know I do have my thirty years in with the school system…” Louise trailed off. “I probably have enough leave to take me to the middle of the school year and then retire and be a full time grandmother.”

“Did you use a lot of your time when Harold passed away last winter?” Callie questioned. She loved the idea of Louise caring for Baby O when she went back to work. It meant she wouldn’t have to pick a day care and worry about him being around other children and catching whatever they had.

“Well, when the boys were younger, I never had much leave time saved up, but once they got a little older, it was amazing how many hours I could accumulate and then just roll over,” Louise laughed.

“I love the idea, personally, but I’m sure George won’t,” Callie shrugged. George never liked any of her ideas that involved his mother helping them. She loved Louise and would trust her with their child without a second thought.

“We’ll just have to sell him on it,” she smiled.
“Sell me on what?” George questioned placing a kiss on the top of Callie’s head and wrapping her arms around her belly, saying hello to Baby O.

“Just an idea your mother had it all. We can talk about it later,” she explained turning around on her stool to face him, placing her arms around his waist. “How was your day? I missed you.”

George smiled down at her as he held her close to him. This morning they had been yelling at each other over pants and his mother was yelling at him over not being understanding enough to his wife’s needs. And now she was his Callie, the woman who he needed. “My day was good. I got to scrub in on a couple things so that is always fun. Of course Sloan doesn’t let you touch anything in surgery. You just stand there,” he explained gently rubbing her back.

Callie moaned softly and laid her head on his chest. She usually didn’t admit she was in pain, but he knew that was a spot he could always rub and she would feel better. She wanted to be able to handle being pregnant and not whine about every ache and pain she experienced. “Didn’t that get you laid last night?” she said quietly.

“What did? Rubbing your back, yeah and it got me something after the sex too,” he whispered with a smirk.

“Are you trying to get that again?”

“Mrs. O’Malley,” he grinned. “I’m loving the way you’re thinking, but I don’t believe you’ve fed my son tonight, so what does Baby O want for dinner? Because he needs to eat so he can get big and strong before he comes into the world.”

Callie thought for a moment as she snuggled into George. “Pizza, with mushrooms and garlic knots,” she told him.

He ran a hand through her hair, “Try again. Way too many carbs right there baby with the possible gestational diabetes.”

“We don’t even know yet and that’s what I’m craving,” she complained.

“Wait, you might have gestational diabetes?” Louise questioned glancing over at the two of them before setting down her potato and the peeler. “And you neglected to tell me?”

“It’s not a big deal until they do the test on Tuesday,” Callie explained pulling her head from George’s chest. “I would have to have the test anyways, but Baby O is measuring big and he wasn’t when we had the ultrasound. So Addison is a little worried, that’s all.”

“It is a possible big deal Callie,” George said firmly. “And you need to be careful until we get the results of the test back. It puts you at higher risk for complications.”

She glared at him, “I’m a doctor too, don’t forget that. I’ve been a doctor longer then you, too. I know what the risks are and I also know not to stress myself out worrying about nothing until it’s something. I’m doing everything right. I eat a balanced diet, I get exercise, I go to all my appointments, take my vitamins. I’m doing everything right here George!”

“And I’m not trying to say you’re not!” he exclaimed.

“Yes, you are!” she yelled getting up and stomping upstairs, slamming the bedroom door behind her.

“George, you shouldn’t have gotten on her case if you don’t know for sure. Her hormones are going crazy right now and the two of you were perfectly fine, until you opened your mouth.”

“That was only half a Callie tantrum, you’re still safe,” Diego assured as he resumed peeling potatoes.

“I’m trying to look out for my wife and child and if she doesn’t like it, she’ll get over it. I’m only trying to do what is best for the both of them. If she doesn’t see that and wants to cope her little attitude with me, I don’t care,” George said grabbing the menu for the pizza place.

“So you’re going to get her what she wants even after you told her she shouldn’t have it?” Louise questioned eyeing her son who was presently glancing over the menu.

“No, she wants Italian food, I’m just going to find her something she can have and order the garlic knots. She just doesn’t need all those simple carbs to spike her blood sugar to make the test come back positive. She is doing all the right things, so she shouldn’t have it. What do you guys want?”

“Egg plant parmesan,” Diego told him grabbing another potato.

“That sounds good, I’ll have that as well,” Louise agreed smiling at Diego.

“Are they always like this?” he questioned quietly while George placed the order. He got himself a chicken parmesan and got Callie chicken marsala with mushrooms.

“Pretty much,” Louise laughed.

“I can tell I’m going to like it here.”
