Izzie stood in the kitchen of Meredith’s house, baking cookies. Some were in the oven cooking and others needed to be iced. This is what she did in her spare time. She was lonely. Denny was gone and everyone else was so wrapped up in their own lives to see her crying on the inside. She could hear Mark and Derek chuckling to themselves into the living room, they had no idea she was even here. Well they did, because she had done in and offered them some cookies, but they had made no attempt to ask her to join them. Instead, she was in the kitchen, baking her life away.
The timer sounded, telling Izzie that the next batch of cookies was finished baking. She opened the oven and smiled as the smell of fresh sugar cookies filled the kitchen. She removed the tray from the oven and set it down, so the cookies could cool for a few minutes. She turned her attention back to making up icing bags, so she could ice all these cookies.
A little while later, she was sitting in a huge mess of cookies, all iced and ready to be enjoyed by everyone who lived here or anyone who would come and pass through. Maybe she would pack some up and take them to the hospital, that way many people would get to enjoy the ten dozen cookies she had baked for no reason other then she didn’t want to feel so alone.
Mark wondered into the kitchen, a few minutes later to get a few more beers out of the fridge. He was going to need to hit the road soon if he wanted to be at his best for his surgery in the morning. He found it odd and strange that Derek lived with a bunch of residents. They weren’t almost done with their residency, they were still just starting out. “Stevens,” he addressed with a nod. “Is Santa’s elf making cookies?” he questioned eyeing the treats on the counters.
Izzie pulled her attention away from the candy cane cookie in front of her and watched as Mark pulled some beers from the fridge. “No, I’m just trying not to be so lonely,” she said with a shrug of her shoulders as she watched him crack open the deer and take a sip from the bottle. “Would you like one?”
Mark stepped closer to the counter and snatched a cookie from the pile. He bit off the head of Santa Clause and chewed it. “Doesn’t go with beer,” he announced with a shrug of his shoulders. He took the rest of the half eaten cookie with him into the living room along with the beers, not saying anything else for the rest of the evening to Izzie.

Izzie had packed up all the sugar cookies and brought them to the hospital with her. They were going to go bad sitting on the counter at Meredith’s, only getting picked at here and there. If she put them in the longue they would at least get eaten. She watched as Mark came in and grabbed a few cookies. “What? I heard the nurses say there was cookies in here,” he told her.
Izzie laughed and nodded her head, “Well I hope you enjoy them. Merry Christmas Dr. Sloan.”
“Merry Christmas to you too Dr. Stevens,” he said with a smile. He wasn’t one for holidays and buying gifts in recent years. The last Christmas he had celebrated was his one and only with Addison. To him it was just another day of the year that people made a big deal out of.
“Do you have any big plans for the holidays?” Izzie questioned folding her hands on the counter and smiling at him. She was just trying to be polite and make conversation. Maybe if he wasn’t do anything he would end up at the house with everyone else. She never had a problem feeding more people.
“I’m not much for holidays,” Mark told her as he took another cookie. They were very tasty and went better with coffee then they had with beer the other night.
Izzie nodded her head, it seemed if you worked in the hospital, you weren’t much for the holidays unless you had children or family near by. “Well, we are having a dinner at the house and you are more than welcome to come,” she invited with a warm smile. He shouldn’t have to spend a holiday alone.
“What time?” Mark asked. He had a shift at the hospital, but he really didn’t want to go sit at Joe’s or in his hotel room again. All it did was depress him. He had been hanging around at Meredith’s a lot lately and they usually had a good time.
Izzie smiled, glad he would be coming. She loved having people over the house. She was better at baking, but she was working on the actual cooking meals part. “We’ll be eating around six, but whenever you want to drop in is fine,” she smiled as her beeper went off. She glanced down at it and sighed, “I’m sorry, I have to take this, but I’ll see you on Christmas!” she said with a wave as she walked away.

Mark Sloan had been spending two years with Izzie Stevens and he was ready to take the plunge. Derek had been teasing him about it. He wasn’t the marrying type, but Izzie had changed that about him It wasn’t a bad thing, it was a good thing he was a better man because it.
This Christmas was going to be a little different. He was going to make sure Izzie wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. She was in the kitchen baking the sugar cookies he asked for every year. “Izzie, could you come in here?” he called.
He hoped she would say yes, they were already living together in their own apartment and had bulbs on the tree for the years they had been together. It was the logical next step that he was ready to make. He had tied the ring to one of the bottom branches of the tree.
A few seconds later Izzie came into the living room and smiled at Mark. “Lay under the tree with me,” he said, holding his hands out to her. He knew she adored looking at the lights. She had tried to get him to lay down with her since they had put it up.
“I can’t right this second, I have cookies in the oven,” she explained to him.
“It’ll just take a second,” he promised her with a wink.
Izzie shook her head and sighed and moved closer to him. He finally wanted to do this with him. It warmed her heart. She had never set out to change him or make him something he wasn’t, but now he wasn’t just a man, he was a good man. Mark was already laying under the tree, so she laid next to him, placing her head on his shoulder, listening for the timer in the kitchen. Something caught her eyes though, something shiny, she reached out for and the item fell into her hand.
“Will you marry me?” Mark asked quietly as she opened her hand to see the ring she was holding.
“Yes.”
“Merry Christmas,” Mark whispered.
