You could say that January has been my month of optimism (whether or not it pays off? Quite another story). I've been humbled to silence by the transition of power in Washington. I've seen MILK twice and have been rendered furious at the cyclical nature of civil rights, the profoundly harmful nature of apathy and obliviousness.

Cycles are necessary to progress. Think about the relatively short period of time in which these rights have been recognized for many ethnic groups. Lifestyles (debatable phrase, I know)are the logical next step to the racial rights that were granted only 40 something years ago. In the whole course of western progression, this is a very short period of time. Look at how long women had to struggle to gain rights in a patriarchial society (a struggle, not unlike gay rights,that is directly contrary to Biblical texts), and black women were the latest ones to feel the benefits of this struggle. It will come for gay rights, but patience is a must, and like most struggles, unfortunately, there will be victims, and those victims will fuel the changes necessary. As long as there are strong voices like MLK and others, not militant voices, society will evolve. I know a gay man in San Francisco who was originally abandoned by his ultra-conservative Mormon family who is now a successful middle-school principal and accepted by his family. This is quite an accomplishment because his father was a high-ranking member in the NC Mormon church. If a Mormon can overcome...
