Tsunami warnings in New Zealand?!

They've called the warning off. If they hadn't, it would have hit about 10 minutes ago, and all I can say to that is: 1) what a rude awakening, and 2) O.O

Hopefully you're not close enough to the coast to really have to worry about that kind of thing?

I'm actually not sure what coast it would have hit first, so I don't know whether I would have been affected. I'll find out more about it today, but if it was coming from the east, it would have got me, because I'm about 1 major road away from the beach on that side. O.O

I'm on the USGS email reports, and when that came over my desk of an 8.0, my eyes about popped out. Most mid-ocean large earthquakes (mid-7s are pretty common) are not in any place where they cause trouble, but that one was dang close to Tonga, and after the tsunami from before... I spent the next half hour periodically poking at the news sites to see if any news was coming out of it. *So* glad everything came out okay!

Oh gods yes -- my friend apparently lives about a block from the beach, too, so we're very glad... Eep!
