One step forward, on hold for the number of steps back...

So. Re: my last post, it appears that the filter has been removed (changelog post here: http://community.livejournal.com/changelog/6283445.html), but so far we haven't seen an explanation or an apology. All of this stuff is from before the removal:

Somewhere around the 47th page of comments to the news post, people start mentioning the filtering/censoring of interests. The real influx of comments starts around page 50 (it's up to 61 so far). This comment especially echoes how I feel about the whole thing. "You just erased my identity from your public representation of the Livejournal demographic," is exactly how I feel. I feel personally insulted by this whole move (at least 7 of those censored interests apply to me personally). I'm glad they've removed the filter, but I really want to know what the purpose of it was in the first place. Was it:

*protecting the children (*barf*)
*hiding 'undesireables' from the investors/advertisers
*trying to make all those 'icky' people just go away?

The wonderful and always eloquent rm has a wonderful comment here, and another one here.

Some great images here (Created by shinaraz. Please save to your own server if you want to use them):

Here's the stuff after the filter is removed:

Page 58: The list of popular interests is returned to normal.

And here is rm's challenge to them to explain the decision in the first place. Note the responses from marta: http://news.livejournal.com/106909.html?thread=70124701#t70124701

Here: http://news.livejournal.com/106909.html?thread=69982365#t69982365 there is a response by marta where she states the interests will be restored, and that it was a "mistake". Mistake how? Did someone accidentally write the code? Did someone write the code as a 'joke' and it accidentally got used? Or are they just backing off now because they got caught at it? (My vote is the latter). Or! Or! Maybe someone's blackberry accidentally posted it!!

Timeline of events over on stewardess' IJ: http://stewardess.insanejournal.com/229423.html -- I'm intrigued by the theory that "guys" was removed from the interests list because someone typoed "gays" -- I can see it happening all too easily...

She's got a great list of LJ's Greatest Fuckups here: http://stewardess.insanejournal.com/227815.html?format=light

And yes, the macros are starting to flood the last few pages of the news post, but it's Tuesday, now, and there's been no official answer on this other than poor marta's comments. Obviously, LJ's staff took St. Patty's day off to get drunk... *sigh*

wtf?, lj blunders, gblt issues, lj, bitching
