Tardstein Meets the Monster from Parsnip Island

I first saw It Came from Hollywood when I was 12 or so late at night on one of the local independent channels. I (of course) loved it and spend an hour pausing my videotaped copy to get the full list of the movies featured. I've been dying to see Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster for years because of Shecky (you know, Spock's brother) and his lovely wife Shelley.

The movie was awesome in a goodbad movie way! The soundtrack is mid-60s groovalicious (I'll try and find links to the songs.). Just for curiosity's sake, and because Pookie has his computer in the living room for WOW purposes, I looked up the movie on imdB. Did you know?...

Dr. Nadir (Shecky) is played by Lou Cutell, who has also been (in no particular order) Amazing Larry in Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Dr. Cooperman (The ASSMAN from Seinfeld), and just about every TV show in the 70s and 80s. Mr Cutell was obviously enjoying the hell out of this role. Much scenery was chewed and there was a lot of acting with the eyes. He's definitely one of those "You know, that guy!" actors.

James Karen plays the hero, Dr. Adam Steele. Coincidentally, FMtSM is also known as Operation San Juan and Mars Attacks Puerto Rico (because parts of it were filmed in San Juan and on the beach). Mr. Karen was also in an episode of Seinfeld called The Puerto Rican Day, along with Poltergeist, Return of the Living Dead, and every other damned thing. Do these people ever sleep? I guess he gets some Zs somewhere, because he sure doesn't look 8-freeking-3.

The Space Monster (aka Parsnip Fingers) was played by Bruce Glover (Crispin's dad), who was Mr. Wint in Diamonds Are Forever and a bunch of other TV and film stuff. Yeah, now you see where the awesome wonderful crazy came from. Oh my!

Anyway, here's the trailer. Don't forget to play "Spot the Playboy Playmate of June 1959!"
