MST3K: Rocket Attack USA (205)

Jun 28, 2007 10:01

This episode is where the MST3K that we know and love starts to hit its stride. And it's no wonder, what with this rich source material of slow-moving stinky cinematic poo-poo from New Jersey. There's an abundance of stock footage (no upset buffalo though, I checked), hastily inserted reaction shots, and those damn black backgrounds. What's not to ha-, er, love?

The plot concerns an American spy sent to Moscow to check up on the Soviet missile program, celebrating after its successful launch of Sputnik. What the outside world doesn't know is that Sputnik was an information gathering mission and now the Soviets have constructed a nuclear missile targeted on the U.S.

Rocket Attack USA is a Cold War propaganda film, released not too long after the actual launch of Sputnik, intended to rally public support for an anti-ballistic missile program. Some folks will draw parallels between now and then, but I wonder how much of "now" is actually influenced by people who took "then" a little too seriously.
