Saw Darren Criss in How to Succeed...

Jan 08, 2012 23:27

Mostly copy-pasted from the post I made at 3am this morning on my Tumblr. :) I saw Darren in H2$ last night, the 8pm show. Absolutely magnificent! :D PS - for my ATWT friends, you might wanna read this! HINT HINT.

First, I have to say that I didn’t know about the Starkid sing-along riot stuff until I got home and read my dash. Poor Darren. I hope nobody was hurt. It’s a damn shame the sing-along didn’t get to happen, because that would have been seriously epic.

Anyway, here’s my H2$ adventure! (No real spoilers for the show. Just me and my thoughts and squealing over Darren and the cast. :P)

So my BFF and I had this sort of half-baked plan to go into the city to try TKTS out for Darren’s show tonight (Saturday, 1/7, 8pm show). Well, we got to TKTS and H2$ wasn’t listed on the board (and the line was fricken HUGE omg. I’ve been in that line before and it was NEVER as bad as it was this afternoon!). So my BFF says, “Let’s just go to the box office and see what they’ve got.” So we walk down to the theatre and the lady behind the counter says that she indeed does have tickets available. So I ask her what section, and she says, “C. Three rows back from the stage.” I didn’t even get a chance to say anything before my BFF stepped up and was like, “UH YEAH, we’re taking those tickets!!”

So when we finally got to the theatre, the line was fricken wrapped around two and a half blocks! Holy hell. Once we got inside, the usher led us down to our seats, which were in the left section in front of the stage. (This happened to be the section where BOTH of Darren’s kissing scenes took place in front of asfjkl; I need a cold shower STAT!)

Now for some reason - for the life of me I don’t remember what I was doing - but before the show started, I stood up and looked towards the back of the theatre. I wasn’t looking for anyone in particular, but lo and behold, my sight fell on none other than Brian Holden! He was seated farther back from me in the middle section of the orchestra. During intermission, the guy seated next to me (he was a really sweet, nice young kid) told me that he thought he saw some Starkids there, and he was squeeing over them so much, it was adorable. So I told him that I’d seen Brian and he started fanboying so hard. LOL. It was cute.

So yeah, would I like to talk about Darren now? LOL. I’m actually not even sure I have the words, honestly. I mean, we all know that Darren wins at life. This show is no exception. When I say he was pitch perfect in EVERYTHING, I mean he was PITCH PERFECT IN EVERYTHING. Acting? Perfect. Singing? Perfect. Dancing? OMGSOPERFECT!!!! His dancing was my favourite bit. He kind of derps around on Glee a lot and I love that, but he was so great with this choreography. Really. It’s no wonder the director and everyone else is gaga about him. He’s absolutely MADE for this role.

Seriously. I wish I had been watching a movie, so I could pause and rewind and watch Darren be awesome over and over again. “Grand Old Ivy” and “Brotherhood of Man” were just STUNNING. DARREN IS SO FRICKING AWESOME. I can’t. I just can’t with him.

And I was so close, I could see the sweat dripping down his face. Unf. He was having a blast and giving it his all. If anyone is wondering, he remembered all his lines. There were a few that he flubbed, but only in the aspect of the words got a bit jumbled in the beginning of his sentences, so he just slowed down, fixed them, and continued. It wasn’t anything that a normal theatre-goer would notice - just something my creepy fangirl self noted, because I was hanging on his every word. :P Also, it should be mentioned that a TON of Finch’s lines are basically run-on sentences spoken at the speed of light, so Darren was quite impressive in churning out these lines as expertly as he did. True professional, man.

The rest of the cast was absolutely amazing, too. Christopher Hanke as Frump was superbly hysterical. So, so funny. And Mr. Bratt was played by Michael Park, which I didn’t know until he stepped out on stage! He was fantastic in this show. I was on my feet screaming and clapping for him when he took his curtain call. :) He was AWESOME. He sung and danced and he was just perfect!!! I miss Jack!

And lastly, the show is HYSTERICAL! OMG. I did NOT expect it to be as funny as it was. My BFF knew next to nothing about the show and she was laughing more than I was! It’s hysterical and wonderful and beautiful and Darren and kissing and Darren and sweat and Darren and dancing and and-

Yeah. Amazing. Best day ever. I am SO HAPPY I got to see Darren. I hope you do, too! And if you don’t get a chance to, don’t despair. This won’t be his last time on Broadway, believe you me. He’s amazing. He’ll be back. :)

ETA: I saw the video of the supposed "riot"...and there wasn't one, at least not in the vid I watched. Darren just came out to sign like always, and the Starkid boys were there signing stuff too, and Darren did his thank you speech and that was it! No fans breaking down barricades or whatever. But I'm not sure if the vid I saw caught the whole thing, so...I guess we can all believe what we want to believe. :P
