my ipod broke (4 years of good tunes, never filled up all 20GB) so Im thinking of getting a phone with an mp3 player. Is this a bad idea? ipods cost $200+ anyway.

I don't pay attention to 'gadgets'

I looked into this and the trouble is most phones don't emphasize capacity or music playing as much. Features & ad copy from i-phone rivals talk more about internet browsing capabilities. They call these "smartphones" and they cost a good deal more than a normal mp3 player ($400-600, though I suppose you'll get a fair discount if you sign a contract). Most of them (like a blackberry I checked out at newegg.com) have about 64MB (yes MB) onboard and a microSD flash slot, so you can buy a card separately (8GB for ~$90, 2gb for ~$15)

htc touch, htc wizard
t-mobile mda pro
Verizon XV6700
a lot of these may be old models - all the articles about iphone alternatives I found were from 2007

Under compatibility on the bottom right of this page, you'll see a list of 'mp3 player phones' which are more compact, less screen size, probably less wireless internet capability, but better suited to mp3 playing and phone use and less expensive. There's a few from LG (muziq, chocolate) and one from Samsung I can find right now.

the nokia Xpress looks like it might be good - only 100 bucks and comes with 1GB for media. Ive also had nokias my whole life and they're kinda lame and endearing. I think I may go to a T-mobile store and see if adding 8GB is any problem
