And lo, it was declared the fiend should be vanquished.

It is done.

The bush is dead. I have killed the bush.
The bush will no longer attempt to stab any of the fine folks that visit my home

Suggestions for its replacement will be given all due consideration.

Hrm...roses are equally stabby. The walkway goes right next to it, so it'd be preferable to have something there that won't attack our visitors. :)

perhaps something soft and trellis-y? like honeysuckle and morning glories
(therefore it's spread is easily controlled and it gives the porch/walkway slight privacy, plus fragrance)

If you want a bush less prickley bushes the only ones that spring to mind are rhodedendrons but they do get big... if not there are tons of safe ground cover plants, or if you cook at all there is always the nice safe herb garden option.
