I love my mother. She gave me life. She brought me into this world. She kept me safe and nurtured me for the 9 months I was not yet a viable life form then allowed herself to be brutally butchered (aka had a C-section) to give birth to me. She didn't have to do it, but she did. That alone should be enough to warrant the respect of your child. However I don't think I would have come to this place without a few well-placed ass-whoopins along the way. Not to mention seeing my sister get one at 16 years old (that was more traumatizing then having to pick out the belt with which you were going to be hit).
In my humble opinion, children need to have a basic grasp of the meaning of absolute authority (Mom brought you in to this world, she can take you out!) before they can mature into having a reasonable respect for realistic authority (Mom brought you into this world. period.)
