DAY 12 - 7/4/06 155.1

Jul 04, 2006 10:02

Skyline Lodge to Battell 13.8
Weather: Partly cloudy, later overcast
Animals: Bird that flew into my arm!

We woke early this morning when the older lady of the group started moving around. She said that she had seen a moose at the pond in front of the shelter so Tim and I went down to the water’s edge to see what we could see. Sadly, today it wasn’t a moose. Eric told us that moose tend to shit in one area, which corroborated our observations.
The hike started out with the ups and downs I’m finding typical of this section of the LT. No flat stretches here! Some views were nice but the day grew hazier. Rain was predicted so we hiked at a fast pace, passing one hiker. Mt. Cleveland was a bear, but afterwards was lunch! The trail is doling out a lot of the same, small spruce, moss covered stones, muddy pits. In some spots the trail is overgrown.
Once in camp, we discovered a wilderness & farm hiking squad, 3 girls and 4 boys as well as their counselors. They were exuberant preteens with a lot of questions. The caretaker, Mike, came around to say a few words. As we made dinner he offered us hot cocoa! We tried to give him something in return, but he was busy playing harmonica with one of the counselors playing a backpacking guitar. (Mike also had a mini harmonica on his hemp necklace around his neck). So we slid up the hill past the privy for a few words alone. The kids were really nice and had some interesting questions, but they were starting to get to us. Now they’re whispering about card games next to us! I hope they sleep soon. “PEANUT BUTTER!”
