So I just watched the "Public Forum" involving Obama and McCain. It was moderated well, I thought, and I'm glad the audience behaved themselves. I was undecided as to whom to vote for before the Forum...and I still am. I'm leaning more toward one candidate now than I was before, but I'm still not sure ( Read more... )

I'm totally with you on this one.

you remind me of something i read recently: the first six or seven pages of Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. I really need to finish that book. Have you read it?

in those first few pages they discuss the link between the legalization of abortion in the 70s and the sudden and amazing decrease in crime rates 20 years later. (if you haven't read it, see if you can google-book it and just read the first bit of it. good stuff.)

now, with what at least feels like a boom in teen pregnancies going on, it is obvious that the lame excuses we have for sex education (actually... education in general, but that's another story...) in our schools is really, really, really ineffective. not only is it ineffective at producing the effect it is supposed to have (decreasing unwanted pregnancies, right?), it causes so many problems for those of us so ill informed about one of our basic human capacities. I can't say I know exactly which things talking about when you say 'neurotic,' but I can definitely identify with feeling that way about sex in general. not only does shitty sex ed make for really ill informed people... not to sound too grim or anything... but perhaps it also produces a good chunk of future criminals.
