I am walking this year. For my mother. For my friends. For you that have not, and I hope are never, affected.
I am getting a group of female firefighters to walk this in turnouts to bring awareness to a growing problem within our ranks, breast cancer as a job related illness for firefighters. SFFD recently lost one of their own to this disease and it's opening the world's eyes to the fact that like heart disease, lung cancer, brain tumors that breast cancer can, in fact, be linked to the carcinogens we come in contact with as firefighters. But the fight has just begun to get worker's comp to recognize breast cancer as a job-related illness.
