Did absolutely no knitting last night -- instead I screwed around with my Blackberry for longer than I should have, though the reboot app alone was worth the time spent browsing and downloading apps, even if I turn out not to like any of the others I got to check out. One of the tabs has broken off my
tasteful neon green leopard-pattern case, given how often I've had to pry it open in recent months to do a battery pull to reboot my phone, and now I can replace it without worrying about how quickly the next case will be destroyed. (I'm leaning towards this
paint splatter design.)
So playing with the phone took me a bit longer than I should have spent, and while I'd hoped to be in bed by 10pm it wound up being closer to 11pm by the time I stopped reading and shut off the light. Still, a decent amount of sleep, and to work by my usual time. Another day spent at the front desk, sadly.
And it's Marvin's day to have the run of the living room, and he was delightfully underfoot this morning. (Last night, too -- when I came back from the bathroom to go to bed, he slipped in through the door when I did and took a few minutes to explore before I managed to shoo him back out.) Bodyslamming a slinking cat three times his weight, venturing up to the point where the living room carpet gives way to the kitchen linoleum and craning his head round the corner to watch me feed the cats, running up to me whenever I came out of the kitchen, lurking between my feet as I ate breakfast. I'm used to eating one-handed (the left hand needs to be free to hold my book) so I was able to reach down and give him lots of head-skritches while I ate. I made a point of eating a couple of the strawberries I got on last night's grocery run, too, to get a pair of strawberry tops to offer the bunnies.
Dang, I keep forgetting -- I need to call the rabbit vet and see if I can bring Willow in for an establishing visit on one of the two days I've taken off next month. I have a sneaking suspicion their office is closed Fridays and I'll wind up moving one of those days to the Monday of the same week instead...

Bones of long-dead animals conjure ghosts at Yellowstone -- "They tell a story, these bleached bones that gleam in the sun in Yellowstone National Park. Bones on landscapes like Yellowstone may provide detailed accounts of how animal populations have changed over the last few decades or even century, scientists have found. 'The skeletons of long-dead animals lying on landscapes provide critical insights into our understanding of ecosystem history, especially how populations have changed,' says biologist Joshua Miller of Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. His results, published today in the journal PLoS ONE, provide a deeper context for the many disturbances altering ecosystems around the world, including global warming, overharvesting and habitat destruction."

Khaki; Or, How India Invented Camouflage by G.D. Falksen -- "Throughout the 19th century, colorful uniforms were the order of the day, a practice inherited from the 18th century. Beginning with the general adoption of drab colors shortly before the First World War (or during it, kicking and screaming, in the case of the French) and continuing through the development of pattern camouflage in the decades that followed, the 20th century witnessed the adoption of camouflage uniforms as a battlefield standard, replacing the earlier fashion-conscious model. But in fact, the practice of using camouflaged uniforms began half a century earlier, in the middle of the 19th century, in the dry and dusty regions of northwestern India, with the creation of a not particularly glamorous shade of brown known as 'khaki.'"
Right, winding things up. Happily enough, I've got maybe five minutes' worth of work left to do and a quarter of an hour left before time to head on out. Should be nice and early out the door to see Grandma.
