Hm....for some reason we seem to have a Green-tailed Towhee visiting our feeder. For those who read my journal, this is the bird that had the reddish/peachy head, blue throat and greenish wings that I couldn't identify before. The one who hangs out with the male goldfinches.
He/she visited our feeder this morning, and Inara very carefully and quietly (I was so proud of her!) drew my attention to our visitor.
Yet....this variety of towhee is supposed to only be around the southwest states and mexico. So either there is a bird that looks a LOT like a green-tailed towhee around here (northeast US) OR we have a real one that is on the opposite side of the continent from where they are usually found.
As I am a novice birder, it IS possible that I'm not identifying birds accurately. Although, since I usually use the internet and books, take pictures of the birds in question and note down identifying characteristics in my bird journal....I think it's more likely that I'm id'ing them correctly and that I'm seeing species that are outside their habitats. I wonder if this is a result of climate change or if it is something that is common that since I AM a novice birder...I don't know that it IS common.
Anyway, off I go to feed my little one and get her to bed early. We've just spent several hours outside and we missed her nap. SO she is going to go to bed early.
