Call for a book

So, I need to find a book for someone. This should be a fantasy book based around and set in the time of the Arthurian legends. I'm thinking the Mists of Avalon in terms of historical research and folklore reference, but without the political agenda and ponderous writing style. I want a book that will engage the reader with compelling characters and and exciting plot, and will leave the reader afterwards with a very strong sense of the flavor of Arthurian times.

Anyone have any recommendations?
