Updatey bits

I never update this thing, because while I find my own life fascinating, I can't see why anyone else would. But occasionally my internet attention-whore self will surface in a spurt of bullet point summations about what's going on. Now is apparently one of those times, despite my urgent need to get to sleep.

1. I've been on vacation for the last eight or so days. I went back to boston for the first two nights of passover, and it was almost entirely awesome. The only downside was having to pump water out of the basement for hours at a time to keep ahead of the torrential-rains-induced flooding. But on the plus side, I inherited my mothers samsung rogue (touch screen data phone) from my sister, and I haven't stopped playing with it since.

2. I haven't written anything in a long time. Instead, my creativity seems to be coming out in other ways lately: painting, to be precise. After watching Bob Eggleton give a demo at Boskone in January (and purchasing the product of said demo) I've found myself just inspired. So I went up to Blick in Evanston a couple weeks ago and got canvas boards, acrylics, new brushes, and all the other odds and ends. Over the last week, I've produced four new paintings. None are at the level I wish they were, of course, but I'm having a lot of fun just messing around.

3. I've started reading the "Soldier Son" trilogy, by Robin Hobb. It's excellent, even though the main character, a boy on the cusp of manhood, is almost as whiny as Fitz was.

4. Having lots of leisure time has led to spending lots of money, and today was my biggest purchase yet. It was for an item both necessary and luxury: new glasses. I've noticed my vision deteriorating over the last couple years, faster than before, but last night as I was heading to a babysitting gig, I realized I couldn't read the street sign from less than half a block away. That was unacceptable. So today I took myself off to visionworks and blew over $300 on two pairs of glasses. Well, specifically, I blew it on the first pair, and got the second for free. To be fair, that included the cost of the eye exam, so it wasn't unreasonable. I had to go back into credit card debt to do it, but in the mean time, at least I can see.

5. With all this free time, I've been watching a whole lot of netflix (when I run out of things on hulu that is.) I've always loved watching tv shows on dvd, all in order, marathon style, but I've decided to try something new. Instead of watching 12 to 24 episodes at a time until I finish a series and then moving on to the next, I've decided to pick three shows and order one disc at a time. After sampling a number of shows, I've decided on True Blood, Nip/Tuck, and Sex in the City (since I've never seen it in order). And in between mailings, I'm streaming the Tudors. It's fantastic so far, though I can't seem to keep track of all the various characters and subplots.

6. Tonight's South Park was fantastic, and has inspired me to clean out my Facebook friends list. That in turn inspired me to tidy up my LJ flist as well. If you suddenly find yourself unfriended to me, it's not because I hate you or anything. just that I have no idea who you are, or haven't spoken to you in years. Nothing personal. but if you're really upset, send me some sort of poke or message and I'll add you back in.

That's all folks!
