Her body was shaking but she didn’t really care all that much, after all the gun was still steady. Even with the wind gusting in her face, and the dirt in her eyes, and the cold sense of foreboding that was flooding through her body. Her hand that held the gun didn’t move.
The thief turned slowly to look at her, there was surprise in his eyes, and he seemed to have gone oddly still. A sadness seemed to cloud over him as he murmured, “Oh Nakamori-san…”
“Set aside your monocle and top hat and come here or I’ll pull it. So help me God I will…” her voice sounded as shaky as her nerves did, but she knew she wouldn’t miss. Not at this range… Not even if it meant she faced all the consequences later.
He shook his head, “Now where did you get that gun? Surely you didn’t take your fathers…”
“I have a permit thank you very much. There are some good points in being the Inspector’s daughter…” well her fiery temper had yet to be drained. Heat. That was good… much better then the cold dread that had come over since her choice, but if she let him go now than it would be proof of her weakness. Proof that she wasn’t good enough. Proof of another failure…
“Mmm you really shouldn’t be toting them out in the open though. Not a very fashionable look for a young lady such as yourself-” he began taking a few steps towards her and she was fighting to keep the gun steady.
“Stay back!! Don’t do that… just… just take off your monocle and let me see your face-” it was easy to see she was ill at ease with the weapon. She wasn’t one to kill, just as KID would never dare touch one of those things. The thief knew it as well, with every step closer.
“Nakamori-san…”
“Please!” She said louder as she clutched the weapon, “Don’t make me do this!”
She didn’t even realize he was right before her until she looked up. Startling blue eyes shone down looking almost lavender in the moonlight. Aoko found it hard to breath as he placed his hand on the nozzle of the gun and lowered her hand.
“You wouldn’t… You’re not made to harm any more than I am.” KID told her softly. His eyes met hers, but there was a hint of worry that lay just behind the outer rim. Perhaps it was the tears in hers that kept him from running, or maybe the way she seemed to have forgotten what it was like to take in air, either way he found himself trapped more readily than he had with a gun.
Suddenly a wave of guilt washed over him as he saw the young woman crumple beneath him. He reached out to help hold her up before she slumped to the ground. “Don’t…” he whispered.
She was near sobs by this point and he frowned as she told him vehemently, “I just wanted to prove you’re not him . And now I‘m worse than you…”
KID froze still holding the arms of the girl. He looked down at her as his own breath caught and finally he let out a mirthless laugh. Aoko pulled back with a look of hurt replacing that of the shame she’d felt moments before. He saw a flash in her eyes and he sighed.
Taking a step forward he raised a glove hand to her cheek and gently cupped her face to look at him as he told her gently, “And hold there is no sin but ignorance.”
Her eyes widened further and he heard the gun she’d been holding drop to the ground. He was a tad surprised she didn’t move away, but rather her own hand flew up to his face. He closed his eyes as she traced her hand along his hairline, cheek, jawbone… He was surprised she didn’t remove the monocle, but rather went around it. He felt her fingers run over his lips last, and heard rather than saw the sob that emerged from her.
“…Kaito…”
“Sorry…”
He placed his hand over hers where they rested on his lips and he heard another sob bubble from her lips. He wrapped his fingers through hers and felt her hands shaking. Opening his eyes to look at her he knew he’d have traded everything to erase the anguish from her eyes.
To absolve her from that sin.
For he too had felt the hand of ignorance. How else could he have failed to see how far she too had fallen?
And the knowledge of how he had betrayed his friend far out weighed any of the sins his father had passed to him.
“God Aoko… I am so sorry…”
Perhaps they were both beyond any remnants of forgiveness…
For with one sin she had become just as much of a fallen angel as he was.
And Kaito suspected he was far closer to finding eternity, then finding a way to save lost angels.
A/N: Still not certain I’m entirely happy with the ending… meh… I tried…
