I believe the answer to your question is yes... he knows what he's doing and he's making it up as he goes along. We do some pretty specific steps, somewhat related to step dancing, a thing that was created in the '30s, I've been told. The Irish folks I've seen dancing just seem to have a sense for general footwork & the cadence of the music & make it up from there.
Good point. I guess what I really meant to ask was whether his sense for footwork comes from having actual experience with Irish dance, or from watching the Dropkick Murphys play punk shows around town, or just having a good sense of rhythm, or what.
This thing is getting an insane amount of media coverage. A dance studio in Boston picked up on it as a way to get more people into Irish dance... they offered a free "learn the Papelbon dance" class. :) Too bad it wouldn't be such a big draw out here.
