I’ve had about 13 hours to listen and think things over, and I think it’s safe to say that Ghost Town is everything the onslaught of early reviews has said it is, and more.
It is “BONKERS.”
It is a more restrained vocal offering from Lambert, but it does not lack impact, what-so-ever.
It’s a complete and total earworm, but while that description is often reserved for fluffy pop tracks that lack substance, Ghost Town is dark, broody and complex.
It does seem to owe some inspiration to the folk-EDM tracks of 2014 and Madonna albums before it. It does have deep house beats that are reminiscent of 1993 and work of recent artists like Kiesza. It *could* be compared to the tone of the X-Files theme. The best news of all is that while all of these things are true, Ghost Town actually sounds like NOTHING else out there in mainstream pop music right now, and that is why it will stand out.
These lyrics are dark, dramatic and will probably inspire many broody, attention-grabbing Facebook statuses from your most down-in-the-dumps Facebook friends. That said, they’re beautifully written and sit perfectly at home in the sometimes sparse and sometimes spastic sonic landscape Max Martin and Shellback have created here.
This track is ALL ABOUT DAT BUILD. It starts off airy and meandering, adding layers and intensity as the song progresses, but JUST WAIT FOR IT! After the second hook, the bridge goes balls out, with Lambert’s vocals soaring and climaxing with what might be the most glorious vocal performance of the word “Oh” that I can recall on record, before the chorus explodes in whistles and basslines once more to finish you off. It’s the most transcendant 15 seconds of recorded music I’ve heard this year, and for me personally, it’s the biggest payoff of the entire track.
