I agree he does sound a bit that way now, but i happened to listen to a couple of his old idol performances ~recently and he really didn't strain at all to the same extent. I always feel like sponsoring an alexander teacher for him lol

in the beginning i thought his voice was nice and then i realized i could anticipate all of his vocal choices and it really started to irritate me, he sang everything the same way

... i haven't listened to anything new in like a year and a half now tho so maybe he's gotten better lol idk
