dis is interesting. how an artist can end up owing a record company $500,000 even if they sell a million records.

Yeah, basically it's like an artist needs to have other revenue streams not only so that they can make ANY money but so they can pay the label back. o.O

Here's what I really don't understand: I get that the record company would want to recoup the costs of recording (paying the producer, booking studio time, etc) but why is that portion up to the ARTIST to pay back after??? Wouldn't the record company get that back (and then some) just from the revenue from the CDs? That doesn't make sense to me.

I'm assuming it's just because labels *can* put it into the contract and people will still sign. And the more costs the label sticks the artist with, more $$$ for the label execs.

Still, a label behind you (I assume) gets you access to the songwriters/producers/pr/radioplay that gives you a better chance of selling out concerts and t-shirts etc
