Prologue

Chapter 2 Chapter 3
Jin and Tatsuya’s friendship continued the following weeks, but always in secret. Whenever the other two were present, Akanishi would ignore him just like the rest. So while he had managed to make a friend out of one of the knights, the other two were still strangers who always found a way to be anywhere, but near Tatsuya. It was only until a day two months after Tatsuya made friends with Jin that this relationship made any progress.
The three young knights were sitting in the courtyard eating lunch before they had to make their way up to the watchtower for watch duty. Unexpectedly, one of the guards’ dogs came running up and grabbed Yamashita’s sandwich out of his hand before running off somewhere to eat it. Yamashita glared after the mutt. “I swear one of these day I’m going to kill that thing!”
“If you do that, I think Nagase is going to be a bit angry. He seems to like that dog for some reason.” Jin attempted to calm his friend down.
“The only thing Nagase likes is the pleasure he finds between a maiden’s thighs.” Ryo coolly retorted.
Ignoring Nishikido, Akanishi continued to speak to his enraged friend. “Come on, let’s go to the kitchens and getting something else to eat, something better.”
“But, we have to go do watch duty soon.” Tomohisa complained.
“Well, we can just have Ryo go up there now and cover for us until we get there.” Ryo glared at Jin’s suggestion. Jin ignored this. “Come on, let’s go.” Jin dragged his friend in the direction of the kitchens while Tomohisa was forced to mumble a “fine”.
Ryo watched as his friends left, leaving him to cover for them. Once they were out of sight, he angrily got up and made his way towards the tall tower in the middle of the castle grounds.

Tatsuya was hiding at the top of the watchtower reading a book, enjoying the beautiful scenery and the warm breeze from the south. He often hid up there, out of sight of the guards who were on duty, even during the winter when most would think it was too cold to be exposed to the elements like that. Instead, Tatsuya enjoyed the gently falling snow and the chill he could feel to the bottom of his bones, even when tightly wrapped up in furs as he often was. This place made him relax and forget everything about his complicated life as he escaped to a world of fantasy inside the book he brought with him. As much as he loved training and sword fighting, this was his favorite place to be and he wished he could just stay up there forever. But then the afternoon bells struck, telling him that he must move on to his afternoon lessons.
He climbed down off the roof and slid passed the guards who were getting ready for the end of their shift. There wasn’t much in the watch tower except long spiral stairs with arrow slits every few feet and a couple of room towards the lower section. He quickly ran down these steps in fear of being late for his lessons and therefore being punished. However, as he was over halfway down the steps, he slipped, presumably over nothing, and fell, only to be caught, thankfully, in the arms of one of his father’s knights.
Tatsuya looked up to find himself in the arms of Sir Ryo Nishikido who was not returning the eye contact, but was instead looking off into the shadows. As Tatsuya righted himself, he looked over to where Nishikido was so closely studying only to find empty shadows. Looking back at his savior, he spoke up to offer his thanks. “Um, Nishikido, thanks for catching me.”
This snapped Ryo out of his reverie as the younger man looked down at Tatsuya with a small smile on his face and what looked like worry in his eyes. “A knight has to protect his lord and his family.”
“Yeah, thanks.” Ryo quickly bowed before continuing up the stairs, while Tatsuya remained rooted to his spot following the other with his eyes, confused by the knight’s actions. Tatsuya remained there, lost in his thoughts, until a few minutes later, Yamashita and Akanishi came up.
“Hey, what are you doing here? Don’t you have lessons or something to be at?”
The sound of Jin’s voice made Tatsuya turn around. It took awhile for the other man’s words to sink in, but when they did, the future lord’s eyes widened in realization. “Oh crap!” With that, Tatsuya ran down the stairs, hoping his punishment for being late wouldn’t be too harsh.
