Singers-and the search for talent is a bewildering thing. People can never accurately judge the balance between entertainer and performer. Talent, and determination. So as becomes the people chosen are a blurry mix of mediocrity middle-road. Nothing interesting. When they sing you feel nothing. You don’t get an idea of what the song means or what it means to them, if anything. As so the case is the performers are not the artists, they are handed the songs and told to sing. There is no personality, no dexterity.
A little bit of originality in music can go a long way. You don’t always need to be the strongest singer to pull that off, if you have a unique voice and actually believe what you’re singing, it’s so much more impactful. My case in point and hard example is Fiona Apple. If you watch her perform live it’s mesmerizing. You can feel her pour herself into her songs to the point of feeling the pain she’s going through just to rehash it. Her expression takes a hold and it almost feels she’s out of our consciousness, but you wouldn’t want to touch her and break the spell she’s in. There is beauty in melancholy that nobody can capture. Nobody can show it but the victim of it. And no professional song writer can recreate it with a well-groomed all-“talented” puppet.
