This is almost funny...

So, let's recap:

August 6, 2010, my maternal grandfather died, leaving Lawyer Uncle (who's still unemployed) as executor of the will.
  • He left Panhandle after the funeral, saying he intended to return the next week.
  • He has yet to make any trip back up to Panhandle.
  • He has yet to file the will in probate court.
  • In short, he has yet to do jack shit.
  • Meanwhile, at Lawyer Uncle's request, I have stacks of boxes of my grandfather's old personal and financial records in my office space waiting for me to process through them, so Lawyer Uncle won't have to deal with them when he finally does head north to clean up and start taking inventory of the estate.

November, 2010, the week before Thanksgiving, I took a weekend trip up to Panhandle to assess the status of things.
  • The water, electric, and gas in the house had been turned off due to non-payment.
  • Preacher Uncle had asked Lawyer Uncle to send him the bills so he could pay them, but Lawyer Uncle hadn't followed through.
  • I did as much winterizing as I could, draining the pipes, pouring antifreeze down the drains, turning off pilot lights, etc., but for the most part, the house is going to sit empty and unheated throughout long stretches of hard cold and we just have to hope for the best.

Also during November, my mother received a letter from my grandfather's pension plan, asking the executor of the estate to contact them, as the pension owes the estate money. I forwarded the letter to Lawyer Uncle and Preacher Uncle immediately.

December 22, 2010, my paternal grandmother died, leaving me as executrix of the will.
  • I've been over to my grandmother's house a few times since then, gathering financial records.
  • The application to probate the will has been filed with the court.
  • All of the beneficiaries have been notified in writing as required by law.
  • As soon as all of the beneficiaries reply back that they have no intention of objecting, a court date will be set.
  • My sister is going to continue living in the house for now, to make sure the property is taken care of.
  • My aunt, sister, and I have discussed how I believe the inventory and cleanup process should be approached, and they will be slowly undertaking that - with my periodic help - as time and energy allow.
  • In short, not only have I done more to protect my grandfather's property than Lawyer Uncle has, but in the last three weeks I've done more with my grandmother's estate than Lawyer Uncle has done in five months with my grandfather's.

Also during December, my mother received a second letter from my grandfather's pension plan, asking the executor of the estate to contact them, saying that this will be their final attempt at contact, and advising that if no one contacts them within 30 days, the pension remainder will be subject to Texas unclaimed property laws. I forwarded this letter to Lawyer Uncle and Preacher Uncle immediately as well and verified that Preacher Uncle received it.

So in the immediate future, I am facing:
  1. McKesson fiscal year end (March 15 or so through April 7)
  2. Tax season (February 1 or so through April 15)
  3. Handling my grandmother's estate (Now through the end of the year at least)

And now...

Today I was talking to my mother, and she told me that she wants to talk to Preacher Uncle and ask him to approach Lawyer Uncle with the request that Lawyer Uncle agree to have me handle my grandfather's will as well. I've shown I'm capable of handling these things in a timely manner, and Lawyer... well... hasn't. So she'd prefer to have me handle things and get it done rather than keep dragging it out like this.

I told her that if my uncles ask me to do it, I will, just because it couldn't possibly cause me any more stress than having it go undone is causing me already.

Still, if anyone needs me, I'll be over in the corner, rocking back and forth slowly. 'Cause, damn.

stress, family
