I've resigned myself to the fact that books turned into movies are rarely any good. Once in a great while, the movie will surpass the book like About A Boy, but most of the time I end up dissapointed.
I am a reasonable person about this sort of thing. I don't expect the movies to get the storyline 100% with every last detail. I even like the Harry Potter movies, I look at them as artistic interpretaions of each book and they all go together in a big cinematic gallery.
I watched two movies based on books last night. Perfume:Story of a Murderer and The Painted Veil.
Perfume was fine. I liked the book better, but the main problem with both book and movie is the repulsive nature of the hero. You just can't like him, and you feel a bit annoyed by spending time with him. It was a beautiful movie and I'm in love with Rachel Hurd-Wood as a red-head.
Unfortunately, The Painted Veil is one of my favorite books. I had high hopes for the movie. Edward FUCKING Norton was in it! He rarely goes wrong. The wonderful thing about this story is the fact that the reader is denied the happy ending he or she wants. You wait throughout the whole book for the expected to happen, but you end up with a completely different and realisitc way for things to resolve. The movie went ahead and gave viewers what they wanted, a romantic if somewhat sad ending.
I know I'm being cryptic, but I would hate to ruin the storyline for people who haven't read it.
Ugh, stupid movie.
