I just have to share this one.
I go to my C++ class today. The class is supposed to run from 1:00 - 5:30. I arrive and start working on my next lab at about 12:30.
1:15....1:30.... Still no instructor. Check email and the online announcements. Nothing.
2:30.... only three people left in the classroom. Instructor walks in. Says he went to the wrong room. We'll just have lab time today, no lecture.
??!!?!?!??! WTF ???!!!???
An hour and a half!??
I could see going to the wrong room. But one would think that at some point he would notice that NONE of his students were in the class. Did he actually give the lecture to the other room? Did he wait for an hour and a half for one of his students to show up? WTF?
On a related note, I'd appreciate comments on the following
:
In this class, there's two other students who have realized that I'm the one who actually understands things. I've helped both on a couple occasions with the labs. But as far as I can tell, they just don't get it (programming fundamentals). One of them asked me for help today with the second lab. However, to do the second lab, one really needs concepts that the teacher hasn't taught yet (C structures and functions). I told him he'd have to wait for the instructor to go over those things. He said he doesn't learn anything from the instructors lectures. I told him that I couldn't teach him those things, he'd have to wait for the instructor. I have similar problems with the other student.
Last week, I talked with the instructor and told him that students were coming to me for help and asked how I should handle that. I know that some instructors don't mind the help, and some insist that they do the teaching. His answer to me was to tell the students that there are plenty of materials for them to learn from and they should use those.
WTF?
I'm quickly coming to the opinion that this is the worst instructor I have ever had. I can't imagine what this class would be like if I actually needed to learn something from the teacher. To make matters more interesting, he's my faculty advisor, so I really need to stay on his good side.
I can deal with him (by ignoring him) and the work itself (yawn).
What I'd like opinions on is how to deal with the other students:
I don't mind helping another student with problems. But I'm not getting paid to teach the course. I can also understand the position of the other students. Some of them need help. And as far as I can tell, they aren't getting help from the instructor. If I was in that position, *I'd* go to the smart one for help. How do I say, "You have a terrible instructor, but I'm not teaching the class. Sorry about your grade."?
