safe cosmetics

Most of us use cosmetic products everyday. Be it soap, shampoo, or deodorant, most of the products available off-the-shelf contain trace amounts of carcinogenic chemicals. Manufacturers are not required to list these ingredients on the label. I try to avoid making regular contact with carcinogenic and reactive chemicals. Sometimes I use complex petrochemical cleaners. I change my own oil, for all three vehicles in my family. But when I step in the shower, I do not want to lather trace amounts of dioxane and formaldehyde on myself, much less my children.

As a Libertarian, I do not believe HR 5786 is a good idea. Big corporations will find loopholes. Small manufacturing businesses, with insufficient capital to meet poorly-designed government requirements, will be shuttered. Capitalism works best when consumers make smart choices.

If you can afford to do so, the easy way to fix this is to stop buying the shit you see in the supermarket. SafeCosmetics.org has a handy list of companies that meet their standards. I use Dr. Bronner's pure castile peppermint soap, and I think I will be purchasing more products from them. Surprisingly, I recently saw some of their products in Target.
