DVD Collecting and What Makes A Movie Good?

My DVD Collection

Not everyone knows that I collect DVDs.  For those that do know I collect them then I update you on its progress:  I recently obtained my 600th DVD.  Wow.  600.  That is not a small number.  What I am most proud of is that my collection contains no burnt or copied movies.  That's just not my thing.  It contains a lot of movies I got at less than full retail but that's what second hand stores and sale bins are there for.

But I digress.  Everyone seems to have their own opinion on what make a movie truly great and, of course, everyone has their own favourite movie.

For me a movie is truly great when it captivates you - it engages you to think about what you are seeing on the screen and those thoughts stick with you after the movie is done.  When those thoughts drive you to introduce other people to that movie then the movie is good.  A movie is good when the love story isn't tacked on but actually progresses from the story itself.  When the story provokes strong positive emotions then that movie is a good movie.  If it does some or even all of these things then that movie is a good movie.

So what is my favourite movie?  Each and every movie that I have is there because I enjoy it on some level - Yes, even Follow That Bird. (Where's My Jell-O?!!)  High on my list of movies that I think everyone should experience are Strange Days, Spirited Away, Saving Private Ryan, and The Godfather.

So what movies do you like and why?  What should I add to my collection?  Want to know why a particular movie is in my collection?
You can ask that too.
