Ok i just want to say that i love the play rent!!
I was one of the original rent heads ,
I have seen it in new york city twice
the NAC twice
half of it in french in montreal( i did a lighting call for it)
and i plan on seeing the movie.
now here comes the rant part....... the thing that draws me to rent is the dedication to there individual arts wether it be theatre(joanne and maureen), dance,(angel) movie making(mark) or song writing(roger), there dedication to there art, no matter what the personal toil it should take on them,. The idea of the starving artist, the romantisism of it all.
I have respect for these characters,I dont have aids but i do run a theatre company that dosn't conform to conventional standards we do weird as shit , why because its art, and because we like doing it , and we like to entertain.
Now I have had to listen to everyone Rent this and Rent that latly, and it makes me wonder how maney people will walk away from seeing the movie and actually clue in to the fact that there is a vibrant art scene right here in there own city, that there are starving artists that are putting on shows for less then the cost of that movie visit. and a 5th of the cost for a broadway ticket.
Yes thats right boys and girls there are hard working struggling artists right here in ottawa Gasp!!! how many of you in real life would ever actually go to a performance art peice featuring a chick mooing at the top of her lungs, or give money to a drumming crossdresser, or give a cup of tea to a film maker that couldn't pay for it himself because he just droped $3000 of his own money on equipment, some of you yes im sure you would, but the majority of you would look the other way.
So for the love of god, buddah, mohamid , shiva or what ever you hold holy , the next time you are bored on a thursday night ,dont go see a movie, pick up an xpress or other paper and see what theatre is playing , see what independant art openings are happening, it doesnt matter if you have never heard of it, be crazy and wild explore, who knows you just might like it and actually touch base with a little bit of la vie boheime.
