Sleeping with the enemy... (now that's just downright corny, lol)

What if you liked someone, and you found out that not only is s/he a Republican, but s/he voted for Bush? Would this alter things for you? Does it mean that you are an asshole if it's slightly gnawing at you, even though you said it was fine? (Oh yeah, and if s/he used to hunt, and is OK with it. I feel like it shouldn't be that they support/voted for Bush but why. Do they have a compelling reason? Do they have a reason you can agree with at some level?

In my opinion American conservatives offer a shiny utopia built on capitalism, privatization, and destroying the government/nation-state. Their dream is incoherent, an America that is nothing but a brand name, where the role of government is handed out to companies and other NGOs. They offer a postmodern simulacra, the lie of 'traditional values' (read suburban values) that was constructed as Post-War propaganda to reduce class conflict, dismantle the extended family, and support a concept of individuality and isolation that encouraged more consumption per person and per household. They hate the state and love the individual and so they dream not of a nation but of a collection of individuals/consumers.

But, I also think a lot of people are fooled into thinking there is something honest and pure behind this, and many of those people are perfectly nice.

Wow. That was an incoherent ( ... )

No, it wouldn't alter things for me... much. Besides, I'm not James Carville. I wonder how it is in their home, with Mary Matalin as his wife. Imagine that, two strong minded individuals with differing political views, having worked with Presidents. Their conversations must be interesting, though.

If they've figured out how to compromise politically on key issues while maintaining their love for each other as soulmates, I'd like to know about it. :)

I think I would have a hard time being in a long term relationship with someone who had the opposite beliefs as me. I am prone to arguing and I think I would never stop arguing with a partner over it. I would probably also consider myself better than them, and think they were an idiot for being a republican.
