... well, certain ones, anyway.
Around 3:30 yesterday afternoon, I felt a growing pressure in my back, just behind my right kidney. My immediate reaction was. "Oh no! a kidney stone!" And sure enough, I spent the next hour doubled-up on the floor under my desk. The pain subsided for a while, so I drove home, but around 11:00 it had more than returned and wasn't going away. Even percocet didn't help, so I gave up and went to the ER.
Well, they were busy, but the pain didn't relent. It went from unbearable to excruciating and back many times. It wasn't until 2 am that they finally got me into a room. Then the ER nurse had trouble putting in the IV. She made a bit of a mess of the back of my hand, gave up and bandaged it, and then finally managed to insert the needle into the inside of my elbow. The doctor came around and informed me that the CAT scan had confirmed that it was, in face, a 3mm kidney stone and ordered some IV pain killers - the drugs of the title - but even putting those in hurt. At close to 3am, they took effect (finally) and I managed to grab a few minutes of sleep.
But I wasn't able to leave until the blood tests came back from the lab, and it turned out that the blood the nurse had taken had partially clotted, so she had to stick me again...
I finally got home at around 4:30, armed with shiny new prescriptions for painkillers to use until I finally pass the stupid thing.
