PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is pissed off because Wimbledon used marksmen to kill pigeons:
http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/news?slug=reu-wimbledonpigeons&prov=reuters&type=lgns Here's a quote from PETA (one of my favorites):
"Since the use of marksmen to kill pigeons appears to have been carried out as a first, rather than a last resort, and not out of a concern for public health, but rather because the animals were deemed inconvenient by players, you appear to be in clear violation of the law," PETA vice-president Bruce Friedrich said.
This quote is totally 180 degrees from the truth - Wimbledon actually employs hawks to scare pigeons away, but the pigeons were pooping on restaurant tables and creating a health hazard. It seems totally normal, then, to call in professional exterminators (in this case, marksmen)... especially since pigeons aren't rare/endangered and could use some serious population control anyhow. Would PETA have tried making the same case if the pests in question were cockroaches?
Granted, I'm basing my opinion on one article, and maybe there is another side to this, but the major problem with all liberal organizations (many of which I support) is that they go after incredibly stupid causes that make the rest of us lose faith in them.
Am I against animal abuse? Of course. Do I think hunting for sport is bad? Yes. If there's a pest problem, be it cockroaches or rodents or pigeons, at a restaurant where I'm eating, do I think the pests should be killed? You bet I do!
