Chapter 1 ~
Chapter 2 ~
Chapter 3 I look around the cafeteria, bouncing anxiously in my seat. Looking at the people at our table for the sixth time in ten minutes, I whine quietly as I notice that the fiery red-head hadn't magically appeared. Ryan places a hand on my knee to stop it from bouncing up and down rapidly. I look over at him with the pout, complete with puppy dog eyes, that I know always gets to him. He kisses me softly and I stop bouncing instantly, just revelling in the feeling of his lips on mine.
"She'll be here. I'm sure she just got caught up in class," Ryan states reassuringly.
"Who are you looking for, Bren?" Spencer questions.
"Hayls," I whine. "She never misses lunch!"
He chuckles quietly. "She's out for coffee with Cassadee."
I gape at him. "Cassadee POPE?!" I exclaim.
Ryan, Jon and I all stare at Spencer expectantly. He nods and laughs as our jaws drop simultaneously. "Yes, the one and only Cassadee Pope. They ditched Art and I haven't seen them since."
Jon grins, Ryan continues to stare in shock, and I pout. "Why didn't she tell me!?" I exclaim loudly. Ryan jumps slightly and Spencer simply shrugs at my sudden outburst.
"Baby, it's okay. She'll tell you when she's ready. Maybe she didn't want you to get over excited because perhaps it's just a friend thing."
I lean against him and continue to pout. I stare off into space, thinking about nothing in particular. Finally, the bell signifying the end of lunch rings and Ryan kisses the top of my head.
"Why don't you text her?" he asks. I shrug and pull out my phone, opening my contact list. I fetch her number and start a new message. Hi Hayls, where r u? With that, I hit send, then close my phone after the screen tells me the message sent successfully.
"Let's go to class," I sigh, standing and holding my hand out for my boyfriend. Suddenly, something hits my shoulder blade. I stiffen and go wide eyed as Ryan's eyes instantly darken, his features going from soft and friendly to rough and terrifying in a second. I hear laughter and Ryan clenches his jaw, glaring at the source of the laughter - Gabe and his friends - while rising slowly from his seat. I stand in front of him and shake my head rapidly.
"Ryan, don't," I plead, holding his face between my hands. He slowly turns his gaze towards me.
"You can't let them do this to you, Brendon," he snarls, and I flinch away, letting my hands drop to my sides. He squeezes his eyes shut and pinches the bridge of his nose. I glance across the cafeteria to see William Beckett, the shy guy, glaring at Gabe furiously. I look over at Gabe, who's friends are still laughing, just in time to see him lower his head in a manner much like a child being scolded by their parents. It reminds me of what goes on between Ryan and I when I do something wrong. I look between the two curiously before William meets my gaze. He looks down, his long brown hair covering his face. Quickly, he gathers his things and scurries off to his next class. I look towards Gabe only to see him bid farewell to his friends before running the same direction William exited only moments earlier.
Very odd, I think to myself, then I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. I pull it out to see a text from Hayley. Hey sweets, out for coffee. See you after school. I quickly tap in my reply asking who she's with before returning my phone to my pocket.
"Come on, love. Let's go to class," Ryan whispers. I nod and follow him to our lockers to grab our books. I try to concentrate in class, but all I can think about is the way Gabe and William communicated silently back there. Looks like I have some digging to do...
