Random literary recs meme:
Get a cotton ball or pompom. Randomly throw it at your bookshelf. Write down the author and title of the book it bounces off of or lands nearest. Repeat until you have 5 books. Then write why each particular book is on your bookshelf -did you like it, the author, was it recced to you... - and if you would recommend it to others. Pass this meme on and share the literary love.
1. Red Storm Rising - Tom Clancy
This is on my shelf because I stole it from my dad. It's the first Clancy novel I read, back in fifth grade, and got me hooked on him. To be honest, it's not his best work and it hasn't aged well. It's an ok read, but for first-timers I'd recommend Patriot Games or Without Remorse instead.
2. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - J.K. Rowling
Damn you J.K.R. and your horribly addictive books. This is on my shelf because I made the mistake of picking up the first book and got hooked. I'd highly recommend the entire series to anyone.
3. The Crow: The Lazarus Heart - Poppy Z. Bright
Back in '97 I watched a little move called The Crow. Then I bought the original comic. Then I got hooked on the T. V. series, which lead to me buying every Crow-related title Amazon had, including this novel. I'm actually surprised by how much I like this one. It's a bit like a dark chocolate liquor truffle - dark, sinful, and utterly bad for you, in a good way. I do recommend this, with a warning. Although I'm told it's a bit lighter than most of her books, this is a very dark horror novel. There is graphic violence and sexuality, and descriptions of alternate lifestyles some might find offensive. It is not for everybody.
4. Take a Thief - Mercedes Lackey
This is on the shelf because I am a huge Lackey fan. And it's about Skif, who is one of my favorite characters. This is a bit of a prequel to the main Valdemar trilogies, ending a year or so before Arrows of the Queen starts, and explores the background of one of the more interesting supporting characters from the main series, as well as showing a bit of what life is like in Haven for those who don't have magic powers or telepathic white horses. A strong recommendation on this one. It's one of my favorites, and will make sense even for those who haven't read the rest of the Valdemar books.
5. Star Trek: How Much for Just the Planet? - John M. Ford
My name is Fuzzy Psycho and I'm a recovering Trekker. At one point I bought or borrowed every Trek book I came across. The reason I didn't sell this one along with all the others is because it is really f#%$ing funny. Take Kirk and Co., add a shipfull of Klingons, a survey vessel with a psychotic computer, and a planet full of acronistic anarchists and shake well. The result is slapstick, mayhem, strange allies, random musical numbers, and the pie fight to end all pie fights. If you can actually find a copy of this, read it. Even if you don't like Star Trek.
