Even though Shiramata hadn’t really called for him when Yuuki sent Arai to the library, none of the two boys were bothered when he explained the situation and he understood he had been tricked. Shiramata only nodded wisely.
“He wanted to make time alone with Master. Mitsuya-san is very hard on him and Master even more stubborn. Poor Yuuki-kun is actually very-gentle; I doubt he’d do anything to harm him.” He explained, starting to feel a little awkward because Arai, seated on a big pillow on the floor next to his desk was staring at him with unbreakable concentration. “Eh… is there something wrong with my face?”
“No.” Arai shook his head with such frivolity that his hat fell off. “Your hair grew longer. I like it.” He commented.
Shiramata blushed.
“I thought… Maybe if it grew long enough I could try tying it back. Like… Tohru-niisan and…” he stuttered, embarrassed.
“I like it.” Arai repeated.
But even though they thought that they were alone in the library, Jun was right outside with his broom, and he heard everything because the doors were open. Giggling, he threw it over his shoulder and dashed downstairs to the kitchen where everyone was.
“Yuuki-kun is talking with Master!” he shouted once he was there, waving arms and legs and broom to be noticed. “He got into Master’s chambers!”
“WHAT?!” Ryou dropped the iron on the table, making a burn on it. He didn’t seem to notice though; luckily Yukito was quick enough to put it away in its place on the mantelpiece. “How? Master didn’t want to see him and we were all, I think, ordered to take care so that he wouldn’t! How did that happen? And how do you know?”
“Hey, it’s not my fault, and I wasn’t in charge, either!” Jun complained. “You appointed Atsu-nii to him every morning, and he was there, but Yuuki-kun tricked him out and when he left, he went in! He sent him to the library and my duty was to sweep that floor, and so I was doing, thus hearing all of this while Mata-nii and he were talking!” he giggled again, remembering the scene he had witnessed. “And well… Maybe the fact that Master finally has some other conversation partner that’s not one of us maybe isn’t as important as what I saw in the library…” he mused mysteriously.
“Did they finally…?” Everyone lifted their gaze from what they were doing and stared at Jun. Only after his indication they’d realized that the two Atsushis had been left alone together in the library.
“Nope, not really, but close.” The blond boy smiled sweetly around. “I reckon they will though, soon enough!”
“Master though.” Kenki brought them all back down to the ground. “What if Yuuki does something that will hurt him unconsciously? Or make him get stuck into his shell for even longer?”
“I’m not so sure about that.” Shion said calmly. “Yuuki isn’t stupid, insensitive or senseless. Maybe a little thick, but we all are in such matters.”
“What does that mean? Or have you finally decided to tell us what you and Master talk about the half dozen hours you spend together every day since his arrival now?” Shoutarou asked, prodding him with the pen he used to make a list of the things they needed to get when they would go in town again.
“The prince wrote him a ballad. A love song.” Shion confessed. “My head is on the line, so NOT A WORD of this to Arai, ok? I only said it because he’s not here now.” He added.
“Master is in love? With him?!” Youichirou hugged his big wooden spoon tightly to his chest. “Master is in love!”
“That’s wonderful news! Goodness, the curse might actually be broken before his birthday then!” Ryou let out, his voice shaking with hope and delight.
“I think it’s our duty to make Yuuki realize then. And then just let him think what he feels for himself. But I believe Master won’t show him on his own.” Yukito said, scratching his nose.
“There’s no chance he will.” Shion agreed, biting his lips. “I think it’s more complicated because… the prince gives me the impression that he’s come to believe he’s not worthy of another’s love, after what happened with the witch…”
“That’s ridiculous!”
“Utter rubbish! Why would he think like that? He’s a wonderful person!” Takuya let out, standing up and hitting his fist on the table.
“Well we know that, but he’s traumatized… and can't think straight, most likely.” Kenki said calmly.
“We need to make Master see too.” Shoutarou decided.
“Master’s diary.”
Everyone turned to look at Ryousuke, who hadn’t spoken at all until that moment.
“What?”
“Master’s diary. Even though it’s supposed to be a prized and ~secret~ possession, he keeps forgetting it here and there all the time, and whenever he wants to write again he makes Mitsuya-san run around and look for it… We can take advantage of that. Just put it someplace easy for Yuuki-kun to access…. Maybe even under his favorite pillow in the library, or, I don’t know, the table he usually sits at…”
“Ikepiiiiii~ that’s ingenious!” Jun tackled him with a hug, clinging at his waist. “Master will never think it was us that way! It will be like it was his fault entirely!”
“That’s actually very bright. And really, the best way to make things seem like they just happened naturally.” Kenki remarked with a smile of approval. “So here’s what we’ll do. Master only trusts his diary with Ryou, Shion, Negi and Atsushi-Mata-chan. If there’s a chance of his fury falling upon someone, it’s most likely that these four will get it.”
“We should warn Mata.” Shion murmured.
“Yes, we should, very. And next time Young Master forgets his diary out of his room…” Ryou looked at Kenki.
“Negi, can we count on you and Atsushi to get it and put it in the right place?” he asked.
“Of course!” Takuya replied with pride. “Someone will have to occupy Master enough and for such a long period of time that he will fall asleep and won’t look for it for at least one day, though.”
“Leave that to me. Me and Mitsuya-san can take care of that, right?” Shion glanced over to the other side of the table where Mitsuya stood next to Kenki.
“Absolutely!” he beamed at him, making a V with his fingers.
“We’re gonna support you as much as we can!” Yukito reassured them with a cunning smile; out of all of the kids, he and Jun were the most sneaky and loved being mischievous. It was only natural that he’d feel excited about something that could pass for a prank, even if he had no actual part in it.
“Yeah, they’ll be counting on you. It goes without saying though that you won’t act without telling someone about it first, though! And we’ll have to inform Tohru as well, you know; it’s not only Shiramata and Arai who are absent right now.” Shou pointed.
“I’ll tell Atsushi, but I really don’t understand the need to hide this whole operation from Arai-nii.” Takuya said as he made for the door.
“Well if you find them kissing you can tell them both, ‘cause Atsu-nii is such a blabbermouth he will only keep his mouth shut if his beloved one asks him to… And that’s still only my speculation.” Jun told him.
Then, the bells calling for Ryou and Youichirou started ringing, and when they came back after running upstairs to see what the prince needed from them, they had an identical shocked expression plastered on their faces.
“What is it? What happened?” Kenki was the first to get to them. “What did the prince say?”
“He was laughing.” Youichirou croaked. “He was rolling on his bed laughing, and he said…”
“Yuuki-kun was sitting next to the bed, talking with him and Master asked if, from now on, he wanted to share his meals with him. And Yuuki-kun said yes; he said it was alright and then Master told me and You-chan to please bring two servings of every meal up to his room... every day…”
“…Are you serious?”
“Are you sure it was Master and not someone else?”
“It was definitely Master… He looked almost as good and happy as he did when we were in the palace!” Youichirou indicated.
“Hurray then!” Yukito smiled a wide smile.
“Yatta! Yuuki-kun is doing it!” Jun clapped his hands several times in delight. “I wonder who will kiss first, Master and Yuuki-kun or Atsu-nii and Mata-nii?” he continued with a sneaky grin.
“Junjun!”
All of them wished for the happy things to continue happening, and they did. That whole day there wasn’t a single moment the prince let his temper get the best of him and he behaved, and when the sun fell down and night came, his transformation was calmer and less hurting once more. Yuuki stayed with him until he was asleep, and only after he was certain of that he left to go back into his own room. He realized with a startle that he’d spent the whole day out of it and in the prince’s chamber, but that was the last thing he brought in his mind before collapsing on his bed and falling asleep right as he were, before he was able to even change clothes.
The next morning the prince slept in again, but as Mitsuya went to check up on him several times, all he had to mention was how calm and peaceful he looked. So that day, Yuuki spent his morning in the library, waiting for the prince to wake up and call for him on his own. And because Takuya and Atsushi had gone to check up on a new order of books in the big town, in the morning he was all alone in it. At some point, his feet brought him to the side of the room where the remnants of the burnt bookshelf were still visible, and he stood silent and thoughtful before it for a while.
And then he noticed it.
Even though the burnt and bleak bookshelf had been emptied and it usually was left that way, today there was a book in it that resembled no other in the room. Curious to see what it was, he made a move for it and then noticed the silky ribbon hanging from it; it was embroidered with the same monogram that was on every fabric in the castle, and yet it wasn’t on any other book. What could that mean?
“Well I won’t learn if I don’t open it.” He muttered under his breath, and after spinning it in his fingers a few times he held it properly and opened it.
The first thing he noticed was that it was handwritten and mostly messy. Then he read a few lines and understood; it was the prince’s diary!
“Oh no!” he let out and instantly closed it, letting it drop on the shelf he’d found it. “That was close!” he breathed.
Perhaps if it’d been any other human the plan would have worked. Yet Yuuki thought that he had no job prying into the private notes of someone else, and so the plan sank to the bottom of the sea, even though it had been so carefully put together by everyone.
Jun and Ryousuke were on duty to check up on him and tell the others whether he’d read it or not, and they were really disappointed when they saw him put it down without even looking through it quickly to see more.
“Why did he have to be so diligent?!” Jun stomped the floor with his broom as he and the older boy went down the stairs to bring the news to the rest of the boys.
“Since when is having strong morals a crime?” Ryousuke asked, his eyebrow rising.
“I’m not saying it’s a bad trait in general, it just doesn’t help us at all that he’s such a good-natured character! That was the easiest way to let him know how Master feels, and things would have flown ~naturally~ after that!” he complained.
“Yeah, but right now bickering won’t get you anywhere. We should just accept it and find another shortcut, since time is clearly our problem.”
“Mou!”
Jun kept pouting all the way down and refused to speak afterwards, so Ryousuke had to explain what had happened to everyone. Exaggerated, horrified yelps filled the room while he did so, but Kenki, composed as always nodded and said that it was expected.
“He never looked the insensitive sort to me and honestly, we’re only left with the option we had from the start now.”
“What?”
“Telling him directly. One of us should.”
“WHAT?!” Ryou dropped all the cutlery he was holding.
“Don’t you think that would be too desperate a move from our side?” Tohru asked.
“I think it’s already obvious how desperate we are to pair the prince with someone.” Shintarou let out from his dishwashing corner.
“Any volunteers?” Kenki asked. “I know that most of you, no matter how sneaky you are don’t actually have the gut to go out and tell him flatly, so I’m not putting pressure on you. But if no one comes forward-“
“I’ll do it!”
Everyone stared; Tohru and Jun had spoken at the same time, both lifting their hands simultaneously.
“Tsuru-chan!” Mitsuya clung to Tohru’s other arm. “The guy you can trust to get the hard task done!”
“I’m here too!” Jun moaned; he had an ominous look now.
“I’m not saying you’ll fail but I honestly think that Yuuki-kun will think you’re pranking him if you go, Titon.” Youichirou said, tapping his fingers on the cutting board.
“And why is that, if you please?” Jun was starting to get really angry. His previous irritation for the failure of the plan was nothing compared to what he felt now.
“Jun…” Ryousuke caught his shoulder. He had his antenna out because he could sense that there was something really wrong with him.
“I want to do it! I didn’t chicken out like everyone else and I wouldn’t, you know that!” he insisted, looking at the adults around the room.
“I don’t mind withdrawing if Jun wants to try.” Tohru shrugged, but Kenki, Mitsuya and almost everyone but Ryousuke and Shintarou shook their heads, not willing to accept it.
“I still think Tsuru-chan should do it. He’s got more chances of his words getting through to Yuuki because he’s older than him, too.” Youichirou stomped his foot on the floor. “Besides, he really will say it as directly as you can imagine, without unnecessary prologues and awkward wording…”
“Jun! Wait up!”
Upon hearing the last words, Jun dashed out of the kitchen enraged; even if it was only an example, the way Youichirou had spoken sounded like he was belittling him to his ears, and he felt offended. Ryousuke chased after him immediately, and he didn’t head for their room. Instead, he ran to the single other exit of the tower, a tunnel starting from the floor they currently were and led out in the woods.
“Great job, You-chan, really!” Ryou sighed in frustration.
“I was just trying to make him see-“
“Yeah, but your choice of words wasn’t the best… You-chan, you’re sensitive too, I thought you’d be more careful with how you treat us kids.” Yukito said, his hands diving into his wooden washing basin again. “Personally I think we should just let things flow on their own, but if you really wanted to give a sign to Yuuki-kun you could just write him a letter or a note, really. He doesn’t know any of our handwritings so it would be the perfect solution. Master only knows Micchan’s, Shion’s, Negi’s and Mata’s too; there’s so many of us who could have written it and we wouldn’t have to go through this fiasco, even if Yuuki-kun showed the letter to Master.”
When he ended his speech, the four adults stood speechless and skeptical.
“What’s done is done though… And he’s right.” Kenki finally spoke. “Look, here’s what we’re gonna do. Each of us is going to write our own piece, then we’ll have Atsushi bring them together and merge them nicely, and then Junjun can write the final letter if he wants.”
